Carol Summers (American, b.b. 1925)
Also known as: Carole SummersBirth Place: Woodstock, New York
Carole Summers is one of the most respected living American printmakers of the Post-War period. Now in his 91st year, the artist is still working and producing large-scale woodblock prints of spiritual potency. Famous for the physicality of his practice, the large format woodblocks he produces involve using his entire body – laying himself over the paper sandwiched between the hand-carved panels to apply pressure once the ink has been applied. Born in Woodstock, New York in 1925 - Summers moved to the West Coast in 1973. Summers still lives and works on an isolated coastal property in the rugged Mountains outside of Santa Cruz, California in a converted chicken coop at the end of a long private road. Soft-spoken, elegant, traveled and well-read Summers is a warm and gracious man. His imagery incorporates large organic shapes of luminous color, dream-like in their narrative. Inspired by non-Western art, he has traveled the world extensively most often to India and Mexico. There is an quiet optimism and celebratory folk-art nature to his images that fit the Post War California Coastal lifestyle and Art Scene.
