Also known as: Pissaro, Camille; Pissaro, Camille Jacob
Birth Place: Charlotte Amalie (Saint Thomas, Virgin Islands of the United States)Biography:
Camille Pissarro (July 10, 1830-November 13, 1903) was a painter who supported the Impressionist art movement in Europe. During the movement, he mentored artists such as Paul Cezanne, but he also allowed himself to be mentored by artists such as Georges Seurat. Pissarro’s artistic style was not as consistent as his political philosophies. His artistic style fluctuated according to the artist he admired and/or was interacting with socially. For example, in the 1950’s and early 1960’s he began painting outdoor landscapes after being influenced by Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot. He began including figures in his paintings after being influenced by Gustave Courbet. In 1880, he began juxtaposing color like Neo-Impressionists after being influenced by Georges Seurat. His artistic philosophy supported the notion that one needed to stand back and take the image in its entirety rather than focusing on details of a painting.
His political philosophies supported radical, socialist ideologies no matter what style he reflected in his painting. Many of Pissarro’s art depicted peasants and their labor in natural settings. Works such as Apple Picking at Eragny-sur-Epte, 1888, The Gleaners, 1889 and The Washerwomen, Eragny, 1895 reiterate Pissarro’s desire to represent the “common man”.
In 1889, a severe eye infection forced Pissarro to paint indoors from a window. He focused on cityscapes instead of country landscapes. His most famous works of this time include images of the Parisian Boulevard. Boulevard Montmartre, Night Effect, Boulevard Montmartre, Winter Morning and Boulevard Montmartre, Morning, Cloudy Weather, 1897 all represent works from this collection.
