Biography:
Lee Bann (b. 1940 - ) is a contemporary Korean artist best known for his DMZ art and culture movement. He is a painter whose active involvement in exhibitions and symposiums have sparked attention and participation from other artists. For Ban, the focus of his art concerns the issue of overcoming division, which derives from his own father’s defection to North Korea.
One of Ban’ projects included painting murals in Dorasan station between 2005 and 2007, but they were quickly demolished by the station authority. Ban gained public attention by filing a lawsuit against the station, raising issues such as the ownership and copyright of artworks, as well as the public role of art.
