Baltermants studied mathematics at Moscow State University, 1928-1933, and taught himself photography. He worked as a mathematician in Moscow from 1934-1938 then as a photographer for newspapers from 1936, later becoming a professional photojournalist in 1940. Baltermants was a war correspondent for the daily paper 'Izvestiya' and the Army newspaper 'Na Razgrom vraga' from 1941-1945. He was the Chief Reporter for the illustrated weekly 'Ogonjok' ('Flame') from 1945.
