Arthur Garfield Dove (American, 1880-1946)

Also known as:  Dove, Arthur; Dove, Arthur G.

Birth Place: Canandaigua (Ontario county, New York state, United States)

Arthur Dove, a pioneer in American art, was one of the most important painters of the early twentieth century. He was a principal member of Alfred Stieglitz's group, including Georgia O'Keeffe, Marsden Hartley, Charles Sheeler, Paul Strand and John Marin, who helped define American modernism and paved the way for Abstract Expressionism, a style many believe is the first truly American art, influencing European trends and establishing New York as the viable center of the art. Dove worked his way to abstraction around the same time as Kandinsky's Blue Rider group by distilling forms from nature to their basic elements. While O'Keeffe and the photographers sought abstraction through cropping and magnifying details of nature, Dove took the American tradition of landscape established by the Hudson River School and flattened it into patterns, colors and forms. O'Keeffe, who with Stieglitz shared a close friendship with Dove, was a great collector of his work.
