Eve Arnold (American, 1913-2012)

Birth Place: Philadelphia, PA USA

Who was the photographer Eve Arnold?

Eve Arnold was one of the most famous American photojournalists of the 20th century. Starting with her work at Magnum Photos, she was a pioneer and innovator who covered some of the biggest political and social upheavals of the century. She photographed the effects of apartheid in South Africa, the effects of the Vietnam War, and even Marilyn Monroe on the set of her film The Misfits.

She was the first woman to join Magnum’s agency in its history. After a storied career there, she turned to artistic photography. She held solo exhibitions at the Brooklyn Museum and won awards from The American Society of Magazine Photographers, was an honorary officer of the Order of the British Empire, and received a lifetime achievement award at the Sony World Photography Awards in 2010. She continued to produce work until the very end of her life when she couldn’t hold a camera any longer. Her legacy and impact on the world of journalism and photography are incalculable.

What kind of art did Eve Arnold make?

Eve Arnold was a photojournalist whose work often focused on the people impacted by world events. She traveled the globe, taking many memorable photos of Vietnam, South Africa, and China. Her first solo exhibition pulled from these Chinese photos, which were shown at the Brooklyn Museum in 1980. She also famously did a series of portraits of First Ladies, as well as photographs of Marilyn Monroe on set in 1960. Her book, The Unretouched Woman is still in high demand for collectors around the world.

How did photographer Eve Arnold get started?

Born in Philadelphia to immigrant Parents, Eve Arnold’s interest in photography started at the age of 34, when she worked at the Kodak photo-finishing plant. For six weeks in 1948 she was taught basic photographic skills at the New School by Harper’s Bazaar art director, Alexy Brodovitch. Despite having limited training, it was obvious that Arnold had a natural eye for the dramatic and understood how to compose a photo so that it told a story. That talent led her to Magnum Photos in the 1950s where she continued to hone her craft while photographing some of the most important events of the decade. Her work is notable for only using available light, and not worrying about flash or photographic lighting. This helped her pieces feel real, lived-in, and of the moment.

How much are Eve Arnold photos worth?

Eve Arnold photos are extremely valuable and it isn’t out of the question for them to reach five figures. One piece, Large Eve Arnold “Marilyn” Gelatin Silver Print is on sale for $12,500 as of 2020. It is one of her famous depictions of Marilyn Monroe, showing the actress in a party setting, the natural lighting creates powerful and resonant shadows that give the image depth and emotion.
