Arne Jacobsen

Arne Jacobsen

Nationality: Danish

Birth Place: Copenhagen

Born in Copenhagen, to a middle class Victorian family and lived in a home complimenting the era. Jacobsen enlisted stark contrast from the overly decorated lifestyle at an early age and this aesthetic continued through his design career. Through the 1950s, Jacobsen designed iconic chairs with curvilinear sensibilities that have influenced how we sit to this day. His most famous designs are The Ant (1952), The Egg (1955), Model 3107 (Series 7) (1955) and The Swan (1958). These designs can be seen within the collections of the Design Museum, The Museum of Modern Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and within the sets of Stanley Kubrik’s film, 2001: A Space Odyssey. Educated at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in their school of Architecture, and taught at the Academy from 1956-65. Joined with Fritz Hansen in the 1970s to fabricate the 3600 Series, leading to the manufacturing company continuing to produce the Jacobsen’s brazen designs today.
