How much are original Andy Warhol paintings worth?

Andy Warhol paintings are some of the most valuable in the art world, with major works selling for tens of millions of dollars. His silkscreens can have a large range price, but even on the low end, they are typically at least $10,000 or more at auction. The most ever paid for an Andy Warhol print was an astonishing $105,445,000 for the piece Silver Car Crash (Double Disaster) (1963) on November 11th, 2013. This is over $20 million more than the next highest Andy Warhol painting.

Who was Andy Warhol?

Andy Warhol is a painter and silkscreen artist best known for popularizing the Pop Art movement. He created the iconic studio “The Factory” which housed some of the world’s best writers, filmmakers, and visual artists. At the peak of his career, he was associated with some of the most well-known celebrities in the world. His friends included  Truman Capote, First Lady Jacquelyn Kennedy, and fashion designer Oleg Cassini.

Warhol is famous for his use of color contrasts and as eclectic, pop-influenced subjects. His famous painting of a Campbell's soup can is an example of centralizing visual art in a provocative presentation. He often used popular actresses for his iconic images, perhaps the most famous being his colorful painting of the actress Marilyn Monroe. Edie Sedgwick was one of Andy Warhol's favorite models.

How did Andy Warhol get started?

Andy Warhol was born in Pittsburgh, the son of Hungarian immigrants. Warhol spent much of his childhood confined to bed because of bouts with Sydenham’s chorea, a nervous system disease that often was a byproduct of scarlet fever. His father died at a young age, even as Warhol was just beginning to exhibit talent in writing and art. He studied art education at the University of Pittsburgh, but soon changed to the Carnegie Institute of Technology where he studied commercial art. This change would prove fateful, as commercial art was the cornerstone of his career.

What was Andy Warhol famous for?

Above all else, Andy Warhol is most famous for creating the Pop Art movement. Pop Art’s goal was to use commercial images in ironic or recontextualized ways and satirize the elitist overtones from the art world. He created a studio called “The Factory” which housed some of the most cutting-edge artists of the day. The Factory would lead to some of the biggest breakthroughs in the 1960s and spanned the gamut of film, music, writing, and visual art. It’s a legacy that lasts to this day.

What kind of art did Andy Warhol make?

Andy Warhol made Pop Art. Famously this took the form of screenprinting seemingly banal and commercial iconography, recontextualizing for the purpose of humor and irony. There wasn’t much depth to a Warhol piece -- and that is exactly why it had such staying power. Even today Warhol pieces are in high demand thanks to their vibrant colors, cheeky humor, and mass appeal.
