Who was Andy Warhol? 

Andy Warhol is a painter and silkscreen artist best known for popularizing the Pop Art movement. He created the iconic studio “The Factory” which housed some of the world’s best writers, filmmakers, and visual artists. At the peak of his career, he was associated with some of the most well-known celebrities in the world. His friends included  Truman Capote, First Lady Jacquelyn Kennedy, and fashion designer Oleg Cassini.

Warhol is famous for his use of color contrasts and as eclectic, pop-influenced subjects. His famous painting of a Campbell's soup can is an example of centralizing visual art in a provocative presentation. He often used popular actresses for his iconic images, perhaps the most famous being his colorful painting of the actress Marilyn Monroe. Edie Sedgwick was one of Andy Warhol's favorite models.

How did Andy Warhol get started?

Andy Warhol was born in Pittsburgh, the son of Hungarian immigrants. Warhol spent much of his childhood confined to bed because of bouts with Sydenham’s chorea, a nervous system disease that often was a byproduct of scarlet fever. His father died at a young age, even as Warhol was just beginning to exhibit talent in writing and art. He studied art education at the University of Pittsburgh, but soon changed to the Carnegie Institute of Technology where he studied commercial art. This change would prove fateful, as commercial art was the cornerstone of his career. 

What was Andy Warhol famous for?

Above all else, Andy Warhol is most famous for creating the Pop Art movement. Pop Art’s goal was to use commercial images in ironic or recontextualized ways and satirize the elitist overtones from the art world. He created a studio called “The Factory” which housed some of the most cutting-edge artists of the day. The Factory would lead to some of the biggest breakthroughs in the 1960s and spanned the gamut of film, music, writing, and visual art. It’s a legacy that lasts to this day.
