Alex Israel (American)

Paintings

Birth Place: Los Angeles, CA

Biography:

Everything about Alex Israel, a multimedia artist and painter, exudes the cool vibes of Southern California. The son of a real estate developer, Israel grew up in the upper crust enclave of Westwood before receiving his undergrad from Yale university. He spent his summers interning with the conceptual artist John Baldessari and revered curator Ann Goldstein (MOCA). This proved to be a crucible for the young artist, developing his style and aesthetic at an extremely young age.

His video series As IT LAYS (2012) helped showcase the impish humor inherent to many of Israel’s pieces, but it was the sale of his painting, Sky Backdrop (2012) that announced Israel to the world. He has had his work included in the collections at LACMA, MOCA, Moderna Museet, Whitney, the Guggenheim, and many other prestigious museums and galleries. As of this writing, Israel has a number of projects in the works including a sunglasses line, a Netflix film, and several upcoming art exhibitions. Israel is definitely an artist to keep an eye on.

How many paintings has Alex Israel made?

There isn’t an exact number for how many paintings Alex Israel has created. Since he is still early in his career (he finished his schooling in 2010) Alex Israel doesn’t have the breadth of oeuvre comparatively to others in his field. As of the writing of this biography (2019) Israel has approximately two dozen pieces available at auction.

How often do Alex Israel pieces come up for auction?

Alex Israel pieces come up for auction often, but his multimedia approach to art complicates this answer -- his latest pair of projects are a line of sunglasses and SPF18, a teenage surf film on Netflix. In addition to his sunglasses, his books, and his films, his latest exhibition, New Waves (2018) has many new paintings.

How much is Alex Israel’s art worth?

Alex Israel pieces are blowing up right now. A current estimate on the panting, Untitled (2014) has it going between $200k-$300k. Many of his pieces reflect that valuation, with them going in the tens of thousands on the low-end and in the hundreds of thousands on the high end. On the other hand, some of his lesser-known work can be had for hundreds of dollars.

What Alex Israel painting is the most valuable?

Sky Backdrop (2012) sold for 1.025 mil USD at an auction at Christie’s in 2014. It’s arguable that Alex Israel himself is a valuable commodity. His recent collaboration with Louis Vuitton, his Freeway Eyewear line, and his Netflix series SPF18 have all been extremely lucrative. His colorful, SoCal aesthetic has gained traction in both the commercial and high art worlds.

What are the most famous paintings by Alex Israel?

Alex Israel is best known for his painting, Sky Backdrop (2012). After it was sold at Christie’s Auction, he was featured in the New York Times allowing him to produce his Freeway Eyewear sunglasses line, as well as many other commercial projects. He is also known for his self-portrait series, and the film project AS IT LAYS (2011).
