Albert Cheuret (French, 1884-1966)
Art
Birth Place: Paris, France
Biography:
Albert Cheuret was a French sculptor-decorator associated with Parisian Art Deco, best known for sculptural lighting, mirrors, and decorative objects that merge metalwork with naturalistic—often animal-based—motifs. Working at the intersection of sculpture and the decorative arts, he produced functional forms conceived with the modeling sensibility of a trained sculptor. Born in Paris in 1884, Cheuret trained at the École des Beaux-Arts, where he studied under Jacques Perrin and Georges Lemaire. By 1907 he had established a studio practice in Paris and began exhibiting regularly at the Salon des Artistes Français. Cheuret’s mature work is closely tied to materials and finish: wrought iron and bronze appear prominently, often enhanced through patination, silvering, or related techniques, and paired with alabaster elements that soften and diffuse light. This pairing—metal as structure and sculpture, alabaster as luminous plane—became central to the identity of his lighting designs. His international profile crystallized around the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris, where he is associated with displays on the Pont Alexandre III. Works connected with this period often translate birds and botanical forms into elegant, architectonic silhouettes. Many of his most recognizable designs feature avian imagery—storks (“cigognes”) and herons among them—where anatomy becomes both ornament and armature, framing mirrors or supporting light sources. Cheuret died in 1966, and his work remains closely identified with the refined geometry and material contrast of French Art Deco.
