Lot accompanied by letter by Michael R. Grauer, Associate Director for Curatorial Affairs/Curator of Art, Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum, Canyon, Texas
Mr. Reaugh began painting Texas longhorns-or Texas cattle as he called them-not long after his family emigrated to Texas from Illinois in 1876. By the early 1880s, Texas cattlemen such as Charles Goodnight on the J A Ranch began crossbreeding longhorns with European cattle, especially British Durhams and Herefords. Eventually ranches from Texas to Montana began raising herds of European cattle.
