The vivid colors and painterly brushwork found in Texas Cacti are classic elements of Dawson Dawson-Watson's signature impressionistic style. He is among the most sought after early Texas artists to work in this style. It is an exceptionally beautiful example of Texas Impressionism.

Dawson-Watson was born in London, England, in 1864. Before coming to this country in 1893, he had exhibited at the Royal Academy, London, Paris Salon, Exposition Universelle, Paris, Royal Cambrian Academy, and the Royal Canadian Academy. He showed at most of the exhibitions of importance in the United States. He is represented in many museums, libraries, and private collections, both here and abroad.

Condition Report*:

Presents well overall. Original canvas. Stretcher creases with associated light craquelure on the top and left edges. Craquelure throughout sky region. Stable paint layer. UV examination revealed no apparent restoration. Framed Dimensions 25.5 X 20.5 Inches

Dawson-Watson, Dawson:Born in London, Dawson Dawson-Watson studied in England and Paris and lived in Giverny from 1884 to 1890. He came to the United States in 1893, painted in New England until 1897, and then began teaching in Hartford, Connecticut. Dawson-Watson also taught in Woodstock, New York, and St. Louis, Missouri. He began living part-time in San Antonio in 1917 before moving there permanently in 1926 to enter the Texas Wildflower Exhibition. Dawson-Watson received the exhibition's first $5,000 national prize and became hors de concours (disallowed from further competition) for the remaining San Antonio Competitives.
