Description:
ALBERTO VARGAS (American, 1896-1982)
"You Can Afford to Go, 'Ho, Ho, Ho!'- Yours is a Pillow!", Pregnant Vargas Girl, Playboy Pin-Up, December 1976
Watercolor on board
26 x 17 in.
Signed lower right

A second preliminary signed painting on board accompanies this lot.

Vargas made these rare and special works at Hefner's request because the publisher intended to have some of Playboy's greatest contributors satirize their own work in a 1974 humor issue of the magazine. Though Hef never made that issue, he loved Vargas' sendup so much that he ran one of the paintings in the December 1976 Playboy.

This piece was also printed on page 160 of Playboy -- 50 Years: The Cartoons, Chronicle Books, 2004.

Condition Report*:

Framed piece: small accretion on the lower right edge; otherwise it is visually very good condition; not examined outside of frame. Framed under plexi-glass to an overall size of 33.5 x 24.5 inches. Unframed piece: Creased upper right and lower left corners, with tear and crease along the lower left edge; minor crease and fraying to the lower right corner; creasing to the upper left edge with a small accretion on the extreme edge; otherwise in good condition. Not framed.
