Barry McGee
Untitled, 2011
Wood, paint, electric motor
45 x 6-1/2 x 23 inches (114.3 x 16.5 x 58.4 cm)

Barry McGee's FOCUS exhibition was at the Modern in the spring of 2013, and it combined sculpture, painting, and installation. The artist was born in San Francisco, where he currently lives and works.

McGee developed an early and impassioned following for his unsanctioned work on the streets of San Francisco under the tag "Twist." With dynamic images that use the visual chaos of the street to address urban class tension, he is inspired by a variety of sources such as hobo art, sign painting, graffiti, and comics. For the Director's Council auction, McGee presents Untitled, 2011 a motorized sculpture of a figure appearing to spray-paint the wall. Similar figures were in his recent retrospective at the Berkeley Art Museum and ICA Boston.

Estimate: $16,000
