Description
GEM AMMONITE
Superlative "Gem" Ammonite in MatrixPlacenticeras costatum
Late Cretaceous
Bearpaw Formation
Alberta, Canada
Some great fossil specimens are worthy of numerous superlatives, and some can even best be described by using the term "superlative" itself, which is the case here. This is, without a doubt, a superlative Ammonite. Period. This "gem" Ammonite in matrix features a brilliant myriad of colors against a subtle black background. This fossil literally pops off the rock when lit properly. The iridescent Ammonite, measuring a robust 13 inches (33 cm), is nicely centered in the freeform shale matrix. The piece has a substantial amount of electric green but also has several of the "requisite" golds and reds and, most importantly, a substantial amount of blue, which is not a typical color for such specimens. The fossilized shell from this ancient marine invertebrate has become Ammolite, a bona fide gemstone: one of only a few biogenic gemstones, such as Amber and Pearl. Ammonites with this unique and rare preservation are virtually only found in southern Alberta, Canada. While Ammonites can be found all over the world, in testament to the proliferation and endurance of these hard-shelled mollusks, colorful Canadian Ammonites, which have Ammolite preservation, are indeed rare. This spectacular piece is a fossil and a gemstone!!
Considered a "national treasure" by the Canadian Government, it comes with a Certificate of Authenticity. It has been fitted with a metal cleat for wall hanging. There is too much to say about this fossil, but, at the same time, nothing more can be said. It simply has to be seen to be believed and you will not be disappointed. This is a conversation starter and a centerpiece; a focal point and a natural work of art. This is truly a museum quality specimen if there ever was one.
Overall Measurements: 34.0 x 25.0 inches (86.4 x 63.5 cm)
