No. 5 Shaft, Messina Mines, Musina, Vhembe District, Limpopo Province, South Africa

That mining companies can have very different priorities from mineral collectors is well illustrated by the story of the colorful Quartz of the Messina Mine. The mining company is concerned with the production of Copper and when Quartz crystal line pockets were intersected they were ignored in favor of more profitable ore in other parts of the mine. Years later, in 2007, rediscovery of the Quartz laden pockets resulted in a concerted effort to recover the crystals because they were found to contain colorful inclusions of the rare Copper minerals: Ajoite and Papagoite. This stout, single prism shows bright blue radiating 'fuzz' of Papagoite encased within the semi-transparent Quartz crystal. Unlike a lot of the crystals from Messina, this one did not require, or get, the extensive 'treatment' usually required to reveal the copper inclusions within. A little judicious cleaning might improve the visibility of the Papagoite even more.
