LARGE GOLD NUGGET with QUARTZ and LIMONITE. Wedderburn, Victoria, Australia. ...
Wedderburn, Victoria, Australia
Although the external form is largely that of a "nugget", it is clear that this hefty mass of Gold has never traveled any great distance from where it first formed: the surface detail is too complex, with very little of the stream wear and rounding typical of Gold that has been transported long distances. There are numerous exposures of white Quartz granules and even some Limonite - the alteration product of Pyrite co-deposited with the Gold. The color is the buttery type so characteristic of Australian Golds.
It weighs in at a sizable 336.3 grams or 10.812 Ounces Troy and measures 3.63 x 2.38 inches (9.2 x 6.0 cm).
