Ladjuar Medam, Sar-e Sang, Koksha Valley, Badakhshan Province, Afghanistan

Lazurite, the primary component of Lapis Lazuli, has been coveted by "fashionistas" as far back as 3300 BC. We know this because archaeologists keep finding pieces of the stuff in places where there are no deposits: such as Egypt or Syria. Although it has been around for about as long as written language, only recently have researchers visited the producing mines, located in a remote and forbidding part of Afghanistan, where actual crystals of Lazurite are found. Their unique character has since made them quite desirable, particularly if they are still in the white marble matrix that hosts them. Here we have a beautifully exposed group of indigo blue dodecahedrons embedded in coarsely crystalline white marble with a cloud of Pyrite crystals in the middle of the group. The backside of the piece shows several other embedded crystals of incomplete morphology, along with an unidentified mica. This is an excellent matrix example, professionally prepared. The Collector's Edge label lists "Firgamu" as the location, but there is some dispute as to whether this is a valid mine or just another name for one of the mines at the Ladjuar Medam site.

If my clients were to auction something of significance, having Mike as the auctioneer would be a deal maker as far as I am concerned.
