Iron Medium Octahedrite
Western Morocco (ZAG-MAHABAS)

Meteorites are often found on the light limestone surfaces of the hot deserts, and this is particularly true in North West Africa where the many NWA classed meteorites are found. Interestingly, it was Antoine de Saint-Exupery author of the famous novella "Le Petit Prince" ("The Little Prince") who first proposed the concentration of meteorites on the desert plateau. Unclassified NWA meteorites are perhaps the most common and, on a per gram basis, some of the most affordable of all meteorites available for sale. This iron medium octahedrite is exceptional in many ways regardless of its unknown coordinates. The piece itself weighs almost 20 pounds and is covered with regmaglypt "thumbprint" patterning. Moreover, this stunning mocha brown and tan specimen has a tiny (5 mm diameter) hole inset on the side of the main face of the piece. This specimen sits almost perfectly without a stand and has a distinct front and back. This meteorite also has an obviously high metallic content as demonstrated by a small section on the bottom cut to reveal the gray metal content that lies beneath its surface. The reverse side is much less intricate but does display fusion crust on multiple ablation points of the surface of this natural sculpture from outer space. Found by nomads wandering the Sahara Desert in Morocco, this treasure from North West Africa would be a most attractive addition to any exotic meteorite collection.
It measures 7 x 7 x 3 inches (17.78 x 17.78 x 7.62 cm) and weighs a hefty 19.57 pounds (8.88 kilograms).
