Iron fine octahedrite - IVA
Kiruna, Norrbotten, Sweden (67o48'N, 23o6'E)
This incredible piece seems to defy geometry as its linear edges and etched faces result in a unique work of art from space. The Widmanstätten pattern is visible across the entirety of this spectacular "chunk" of the Muonionalusta. This meteorite is considered the oldest known to man and marks the first occurrence of Stishovite in an iron meteorite: a rare mineral that seemingly connects Muonionalusta to an impact event. This piece should be kept away from moisture and humidity, and it should not be touched with "sweaty" hands to keep it in top condition. Machine oil applied in light coats periodically can keep it from rusting. This meteoritic sculpture weighs almost 17 pounds and is a far cry from the more simplistic spheres so often fashioned from meteorites. It truly needs to be held in order to be fully appreciated - the density for the size of the piece is simply unbelievable and the octahedral shape virtually defies description as it is so unusual.
It measures 4.5 x 4.5 x 4 inches (11.43 x 11.43 x 10.16 cm) and weighs 16.86 pounds (7.65 kgs).
