Merycoidodon culbertsoni
Late Oligocene
Brule Formation
White River Badlands
South Dakota

Merycoidodon ("ruminating teeth") is an extinct genus of Oreodont - an "even-toed" artiodactyl closely related to camels and pigs - although with no close living relative. Oreodonts ("ruminating hogs"), especially Merycoidodon, were the most abundant of the Oreodonts in the White River Badlands and are often found in Oreodont beds of mass mortalities. This browser was pig- or sheep-like in appearance but probably was actually more like a camelid. They lived in large herds and were nomadic going from place to place. They were cud-chewing with short faces and "fang-like" canine teeth although this group was more likely the prey than predator in the Badlands. An excellent example of the medium-sized type, Merycoidodon culbertsoni, this fossil is a complete display all on its own With a very well preserved robust skull, a complete set of teeth and a limited amount of restoration, this specimen features an abundance of post cranial material in the form of numerous bones - vertebrae, ribs and limb bones - that result in a fossil diorama with a myriad of ancient history exposed. This fossil is in fine condition, and two small pieces of bone were reattached after popping off the specimen during transport. The specimen was expertly prepared and offers much more than a typcial Oreodont skull. This common fossil is anything but common.
Measurements: 15 x 10 x 8 inches (38.1 x 25.4 x 20.32 cm) and weighs 17 pounds (7.23 kg).Skull only measures 8.75 inches (22.23 cm) long.
Offered at no reserve.
