Description:
EDMOND JEAN DE PURY (Swiss, 1845-1911)
At the Well
Oil on canvas
50-3/4 x 29-1/2 inches (128.9 x 74.9 cm)
Signed lower right: E. de Pury

PROVENANCE:
Private collection, Zurich.

Trained at the Paris École des Beaux-Arts in painting and engraving, the Swiss-born Edmond Jean de Pury is best known for his Italian figurative subjects, namely the working-class local color of Rome, Capri, and Venice. At the Well, an exquisite portrait of a water carrier, epitomizes this Italian body of work, evincing his facility at rendering human personality. In addition, the white-and-grey palette, as well as the attention to textures - stone walls and earthenware pot, pleated linen chemise, and woven skirt - recall Pury's background in printmaking. In fact, his numerous etchings were reproduced in illustrated magazines of the time, further contributing to his renown.

The Kunstmusem de Bâle and Musée des Beaux-Arts de Berne are among the museums that feature Pury's paintings.

Condition Report*:

Lined canvas; scattered light frame abrasions; faint craquelure visible under raking light, most notably on woman's white bodice; stable surface; under UV exam, there appears to be scattered crack-fill inpainting, particularly visible in woman's left arm, but old varnish layer makes painting surface difficult to read.  Framed Dimensions 62.75 X 41.5 Inches
