Description:

JOHN KINGERLEE (Irish, b. 1936)
Landscape, Kilcatherine, 1999-2004
Oil on board
8 x 11 inches (20.3 x 27.9 cm)
Monogram lower right

PROVENANCE:
Alan Barnes Fine Art, Dallas.

EXHIBITED:
Natsoulas Gallery, Davis, California, December 5-29, 2007.

Landscape, Kilcatherine
took five years for the Irish artist, John Kingerlee, to complete. Kingerlee often takes months or years to finish a painting because so much attention is focused on the surface. The desired texture is created by layering fifty to a hundred applications of paint, which take months to dry. Kingerlee often mixes organic material into the colors that he creates for his signature thick pools of sulfuric yellows, reds, silver and zinc, platinum and titanium pigments that capture the steely blues and grays of the Irish sky and sea. He paints with two palette knives (one in each hand) and a decorator's brush to create that "stippling" affect. This method deliberately challenges the linear perspective of traditional landscape paintings and forces the viewer to experience the landscape through the multidimensional surface of the painting.
