Description
MAURICE SENDAK (American, b. 1928)Wild Thing, Nutcracker ballet set design, c. 1983
Watercolor on paper
13.25 x 24.25 in.
Signed lower right
The Pacific Northwest Ballet's Nutcracker was staged in 1983, and filmed for movie theatres in 1986 as Nutcracker: The Motion Picture. The play showcased sets and costumes by Maurice Sendak, and this version of the ballet portrayed some of the darker aspects of E. T. A. Hoffmann's original story. Much of that flavor came from the imaginations of Sendak and choreographer Kent Stowell.
This illustration was also published on pgs 82-83 in The Nutcracker, by E. T. A. Hoffman and Maurice Sendak, Crown Publishers, 1984.
This wonderful work is sure to be a treasured showpiece for any Sendak aficionado because of the rarity of Sendak book published art, especially book published art that includes a Wild Thing image.
A copy of the book is included in this lot.
