This presentation of a man as a noble shepherd by Jan Victors, a painter in the orbit of Rembrandt, was probably conceived as a portrait historiƩ.
Condition Report*:
Canvas has been relined, paint surface is in stable condition, fine overall craquelure, commensurate with age; minor accretions on left side of man's head, beneath his right hand, and beneath his left wrist; frame dimensions: 42 x 35". Under UV examination, evidence of the craquelure inpainted in the face, to the left and right of the head, and on the cow at the lower left expertly done. Stregthening in the mouth between the lips. Strengthening in the darks of the cloak, most notably on the right side of the canvas and where the cloak is tied. From the shoulder to the lower right corner the background is overpainted. Visible in raking light, there are pentimenti showing an adjustment of the shoulder and the figure's left arm.
