A MONUMENTAL CONTINENTAL PORCELAIN LIDDED URN ON STAND
Royal Vienna style, 19th Century
57 inches (144.8 cm) high

Of Neoclassical form, handpainted in the round with Classical scenes against a burgundy ground, the obverse depicting a seated draped female figure with three female attendants, enhanced with gilt decoration, bands of cartouche designs on pink, turquoise, and cream grounds above and below, framed by twin gilt scrolling handles terminating in masks, the corresponding lid topped with a gilt foliate finial, raised on a stepped circular plinth, the central panel handpainted with a seminude reclining female figure and putto, similar cartouche designs on either side


Condition Report*: The lid intact.  Minor abrasion to the gilding at the lower part of the rim and on the knop.  Gilding retains tonality.  All pieces doweled together and has not been taken apart completely.  The neck with some rubbing to the gilding at the rim and edges as appropriate.  Gilding is raised - very nice!  Tiny jeweling and texturing throughout neck, shoulders, and decorative bands.  The body is intact - no visible restoration.  The stand is intact and marked with a blue beehive.  The handles with some losses to the gilding.  The left handle with a small area of restoration to a tendril and possibly to Mercury's chin on the handleplate.  Small losses to the tips of each wing in his hair.  The gilding with some touch-ups.  The top portion of the right handle restored.  Overall in very good condition.
