EXHIBITED:
"At Home and Abroad: Landscapes and Seascapes by William Trost Richards", William Vareika Fine Arts, Newport, Rhode Island, August 3 - October 15, 2000.

The rugged cliffs and tall stone pinnacles Richard recorded in this scene are characteristic of the Cornish coast in southwestern England, a landscape he painted quite extensively in 1880.

Condition Report*: Paint surface is intact.  Perimeter of the painting (only) appears yellow and discolored as though the painting had been cleaned without having been removed from the frame. Visible under UV examination: selective strengthening in the deepest crevices of the rocks, in the shadows of the rocks in the foreground, and in a few of the waves. Visible to the naked eye is a dime-sized patch of dark paint on the bluff at the upper-left which was apparently offset on the paint surface during restoration.
