Description
A LATE CLASSIC NAVAJO SERAPEc. 1870 - 1875
tightly woven of native handspun churro wool in natural ivory and indigo-dyed blue, and raveled bayeta in shades of cochineal-dyed red, with a pattern of finely serrated zigzag bands enclosing small geometric motifs
Provenance:
Gifted to Dr. Robert Morris Bertolet, M.D. (1846 - 1882), as payment for his services as a surgeon in the USA Medical Corps (N.M. Territory). Upon Dr. Bertolet's death, this textile was transferred to his brother, Alfred Spang Bertolet, who gifted it to the current owner's grandparents in 1947.
This lot is accompanied by a copy of the red dye test results.
Dimensions: 47 ½ x 77 ½ inches
Condition Report*:
In overall excellent condition. Aprox. three areas, each between 1 1/4" and 3" in length, of loose weft stitches. No fading. No bleeding. A couple of small dark stains. Selvedge intact. Corner ties with some loss. No apparent restoration.
