Description

Figure of a Standing Woman
Maya, Jaina
A.D. 550 - 900
Ceramic, traces of original red paint
Height 10 5/8 in. Width 4 7/8 in.

Although mold-made, the details are unusually refined and sharp in this standing female figure. Her hands are held palms together in a respectful gesture and point upward to a well-rendered head pendant at the center of her bead necklace. Ear spools and multi-banded, segmented bracelets complete her jewelry. Her hair is cut in the notched fashion often seen in Maya female representations. A simple, long mantle covers her head and falls full-length at her back and sides. Her upper body is covered with a huipil shown as having a textured weave of squares centered with circles and its bottom edge rimmed by pom-poms. A three-part fringed garment hangs over her skirt from under the huipil, its punched patterning suggesting that it may have been a gauzy semi-openwork weave. A textured band finished in fringe is at the bottom of her skirt, from which her bare feet show. Other than several patches at the lower rear the overall condition is excellent.
