This dynamic painting in gouache relates closely to a series of larger-scale oil paintings entitled Cosmic Spring (National Gallery, Prague) which were breakthrough works in Kupka's career as a pioneering abstractionist. In this work and others dating from the mid-1910s through the early 1920s, the Czech modernist became dazzled by the phenomenon of nature's energy. By the mid-1920s, this interest shifted from nature's energy into an intense exploration of the energy generated by machines.
