One of the most important conductors of the 20th century, Eugene Ormandy was the music director of the Philadelphia Orchestra for 42 years from 1938. Ormandy was also one of the most important radio conductors working for CBS Radio. He received the Pesidential Medal of Freedom in 1970 and conducted the first American symphony to play in the People's Republic of China.
