PROPERTY OF A DISTINGUISHED FLORIDA FAMILY

TIFFANY STUDIOS
A Leaded Glass "Landscape" Window from "Fenway Gate", Boston, Massachusetts, selectively etched and painted, circa 1912-1915
61 x 84 inches (154.9 x 213.4 cm)

depicting a view across the Tiber River of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome from an esplanade planted with palm trees and brightly colored flower beds

PROVENANCE:
Christie's, New York, December 11, 1982, lot 384.

This following two magnificent windows were amongst six Tiffany "landscape" windows offered by the city of Boston at public auction in 1982 following their removal from the mansion at 73 Hemenway Street in its southern suburbs.

Designed at the turn-of-the-century by the distinguished architect Guy Howell (whose resumé includes the Boston Museum of Fine Arts), the mansion was listed in 1905 as "Fenway Gate," the property of Messrs. Fred Holdsworth and Robert D. Farrington. Records relating to the house and its subsequent ownership, accessed from the Boston Public Library Voting Records, fail to identify who commissioned the windows from Tiffany Studios or when, but their quality and size confirm that the original owner was a prosperous avid Tiffany patron.

The window is undated, but from the decorating techniques and construction it appears to have been made circa 1912-1918. The enameling on the reverse layers of glass provides perspective, and the etched detailing on the front layers lends an air of increased realism. The Tiffany Studios window department employed both techniques during this six-year period to eliminate some of the more labor-intensive elements of its production as custom demand continued to soar.

Condition Report*: In a wood frame. Overall in very good condition,  some old  hairline cracks to second and third panel from center and  left a viewed only visible when window is not illuminated , close examination the illustration in the catalogue showing one crack going through the urn, also on rear panel second from top right as viewed not visible from front and not affecting pattern.  Generally the window is in exceptionally good condition it has been fitted with light box frame and has a custom made mahogany frame not illustrated.  A beautiful and unique Tiffany landscape window with rich colors and exceptional scale and provenance.
