Mabel Lucie Attwell became a household name during the 1930s and 1940s with her illustrations of pudgy and appealing toddlers. The public's insatiable appetite for her illustrations generated an extensive market for Mabel Lucie Attwell ephemera. During her career, she designed advertisements, posters, calendars, figurines and wall plaques. During World War II, thousands of her postcards were sent to boost the moral of the men in the trenches. In 1937 and 1938, Princess Margaret commissioned her to do her personal Christmas card, and sets of Mabel Lucie Attwell china were used in the Royal Nursery of Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret, and later Prince Charles.

HOWARD CHANDLER CHRISTY (American, 1872-1952)
In the Garden of Eden, 1925
Oil on canvas
28 x 71 in.
Signed lower right
About this important painting, Charles Martignette noted in his book The Great American Pin-Up, "From 1915 to his death in 1952, Christy both lived and worked at the Hotel des Artistes, where the Cafe was located, just off the lobby; his studio in the hotel was one of the most elegant in the world. When the commissioned work was finished, all the walls of the Cafe were splendidly adorned with life-size nudes frolicking in a lush forested landscape. Later, about 1925, the artist received another commission from a private patron, for a work of almost mural size. The painting Christy created in response might be thought of as a sort of fifth wall for the Cafe. The work features three nudes in a dreamlike Garden of Eden, and to underscore the special nature of the scene, Christy chose twenty-four carat gold paint for the sky and setting sun."

This opulent work stands as a testimony to Christy's work, to the brilliance of his brushstrokes, and to the sensuality and eroticism of his female nudes.

This painting was reproduced as figure 22 in The Great American Pin-Up by Charles G. Martignette and Louis K. Meisel, Taschen Books, 1996.

DEAN CORNWELL (American, 1892-1960)
Romantic Couple Seated by Piano, Hearst's International magazine illustration, March 1922
Oil on canvas
34 x 36 in.
Initialed lower left
This evocative piece appeared as an illustration in F. Britten Austin's story, One Night in Venice.

Caption: "And when you have gone and are a Prince once more, it will be just as a man that I think of you in my solitude."

This piece was also reproduced on page 85 of Dean Cornwell, Dean of Illustrators by Patricia Broder, Balance House, 1978.

One of Martignette's favorite Golden Age illustrators was Dean Cornwell, and looking at this illustration, with its pale central figures, clothed in broad patches of deep color, makes it easy to see why Martignette's discriminating eye for art fixated with such passion on Cornwell. While known for his images of pirates and desperados, this painting clearly illustrates that Cornwell was comfortable in any era, with any subject.

This landmark painting was reproduced as figure 27 in Gil Elvgren All His Glamorous American Pin-Ups by Charles G. Martignette and Louis K. Meisel, Taschen Books, 1996.

As Charles Martignette detailed in his book, "In 1936, the Elvgrens decided to move back to St. Paul, where Gil proudly opened a studio. Fortunately, it was not long before he received his first paid commission; a front cover for a fashion catalogue, depicting a handsome young man decked out in a snazzy double-breasted jacket and summertime-cool white slacks. The original artwork was executed in oil paint on illustration board and was unsigned, as the company's art director had specifically requested. No sooner had Elvgren delivered the artwork than the company's president called to congratulate him and to commission another half dozen catalogue covers. The young artist was on his way!"

Oil on canvas

This image appeared on the March 1932 cover of The Shadow, the eighth issue, and is the earliest Shadow pulp cover painting known to exist.
"The Shadow knows. The weed of crime bears bitter fruit, but none more deadly than the criminal genius called the Black Master. Clearly it's a case for the Shadow to uncover this emperor of evil who has turned New York into a city of fear. Not since Sherlock Holmes locked wits with Professor Moriarity have there been such formidable opponents on the battlefield of crime. The Shadow, the elusive voice in the night whose mocking laughter haunts all who have ever heard it: the man of many faces who is all things to all people in the name of justice. And the Black Master whose invisible hand kills the very men who serve him, leaving no trace, no quarter, not even an ounce of pity. Only terror, and a black metal tag which promises more to come. The Shadow vs. the Black Master -- two mysterious legends, equally matched, in a contest of giants. The Shadow. A strange creature clad in black, with the power to cloud men's minds which he learned in the Orient, and a mocking laugh which is the avenger's chilling note of triumph. The Shadow is one of the most exciting suspense figures of all time."

Watercolor on paper
13.25 x 24.25 in.
Signed lower right
The Pacific Northwest Ballet's Nutcracker was staged in 1983, and filmed for movie theatres in 1986 as Nutcracker: The Motion Picture. The play showcased sets and costumes by Maurice Sendak, and this version of the ballet portrayed some of the darker aspects of E. T. A. Hoffmann's original story. Much of that flavor came from the imaginations of Sendak and choreographer Kent Stowell.

This illustration was also published on pgs 82-83 in The Nutcracker, by E. T. A. Hoffman and Maurice Sendak, Crown Publishers, 1984.

This wonderful work is sure to be a treasured showpiece for any Sendak aficionado because of the rarity of Sendak book published art, especially book published art that includes a Wild Thing image.

This lovely piece was published in a special Christmas pictorial entitled A Mother's Days on page 690 of the December 1902 issue of Scribner's magazine.

Jessie Willcox Smith has long been recognized as an American master, and this illustration shows why she is to be so highly regarded. Her idealized portraits of children, always presented with an inscrutable subtext that makes them impossible to forget, are what made her famous, and this example is prime among those prized portraits.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, movie poster art, c. 1937
Ink and watercolor on board
18.75 x 15.5 in.

The coming of Walt Disney's first feature-length animated film resulted in this wonderfully detailed movie poster illustration by the great children's book artist, Gustaf Tenggren. In 1936 Tenggren was hired by The Walt Disney Company to work as the stylist on Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, the first American feature-length animated film. He created the distinctive, Old World look that Walt Disney sought for his breakthrough animated feature. Although only minor characters in the version written by the Brothers Grimm, the Seven Dwarfs took on starring roles in Disney's film version. Tenggren's drawing captures perfectly the major characteristics of each of the Dwarfs, as well as the resonant, timeless beauty of Snow White. Offered here is the original art used as the centerpiece of the exceptionally rare 40 X 60 in. Snow White poster. The poster appears in the original press book, and it was priced at $1.25 apiece to theater owners. Featuring Tenggren's artwork, this poster has long been the most desirable image from the film as it displays all of the major characters.

The all-important Disney film called for something new in style and design to match the storybook mood of the piece. Walt Disney personally searched for and chose the key artist of exceptional talent who would create the drawings and paintings that would excite his entire staff--Gustaf Tenggren. At the time of Snow White, Tenngren's work represented the best of the "Golden Age of Illustration" in the Edwardian gift book era, and his art was ranked alongside such luminaries as Arthur Rackham, Edmund Dulac, and Kay Nielsen. As intended, Tenggren's image inspired the Disney artists to do their finest work in finding the right mood for the scenes and backgrounds, and this art was also used for posters, promotional flyers, ads, children's books, as well as the studio stationary used during production of the film. The success of Snow White guaranteed the continued production of four other full-length features, including Pinocchio.

Tenggren's early, peak period Disney artwork is eagerly sought-after and to state that this is a landmark piece of animation art is a major understatement - in short, this incredible, iconic original is the most important image from Walt Disney's most important animated film by its most important artist. Smaller, significantly lesser quality Tengrenn drawings for Snow White have sold for prices of $60,000 and up. This is the ultimate piece of animation art from the entire history of the medium and a true American treasure. As such, our offering represents a historic and unparalleled opportunity. The importance and rarity of the Snow White poster yielded a record price of $65,750, and this original art centerpiece is sure to reach a record-setting benchmark as well.

But nothing was as it had been. His home city of Ko-ro-ba was destroyed, razed until not one stone remained standing. His beautiful mate, Talena, was dead or vanished. His family and friends were scattered across the globe. And Cabot was now declared an outlaw, with all men ordered to kill him on sight. His only chance was to find the strange Priest-Kings who ruled Gor and to submit himself to them. But Tarl Cabot was not about to submit."

Alberto Vargas began working as the official house artist for the Ziegfeld theatre chain after artist Rafael Kirchner died in 1916. Florenz Ziegfeld gave Vargas a studio above his office at the New Amsterdam Theatre where the young artist created the posters and art work for Ziegfeld's theatres for a 13-year span. After performances and rehearsals, the Ziegfeld Girls would come up to Vargas' studio and pose for him at no charge. Many of the Ziegfeld originals created by Vargas have been destroyed or damaged and very few of them still exist. Flo Ziegfeld was very fond of Vargas and nurtured him. He felt that Vargas' work captured the epitome of a beautiful Ziegfeld Girl. The above black and white photo is circa 1926 and it shows Vargas in his studio at the New Amsterdam Theatre lounging in front of some of his Ziegfeld pictures with works in progress that were eventually used in the Ziegfeld Follies, including the important pin-up offered here.

This painting, done nearly a decade before Vargas started his groundbreaking work at Esquire magazine, shows the artist's early mastery of his material. The subject, evocative of many of his later-themed gatefolds and Playboy pin-ups, combines "modern" American sensuality with a "historical" context. This is the most important early Vargas we've ever had the pleasure of offering.

In 1919, in recognition of his distinguished service during World War I, the Congress authorized the President to promote John J. "Black Jack" Pershing to General of the Armies of the United States, the highest rank for any member of the United States armed forces. This rank was created especially for Pershing and one that only he held at the time.

Pershing was authorized to create his insignia for the new rank and chose to wear four gold stars for the rest of his career. These gold stars separated him from the four silver stars worn by Army Chiefs of Staff, and even the five star General of the Army insignia worn in World War II. Pershing outranked them all.

This illustration appeared on the cover of the novel by Katherine Everard (a pen name for Gore Vidal), Cry Shame, Pyramid Books #23, 1950.

It has been said Vidal published this book under a pseudonym because of his fear of appearing too prolific, and also to isolate his growing literary reputation from what was deemed a "potboiler." Vidal's pseudonym was an in-joke, derived from Manhattan's notorious Everard Baths.

"She wanted fame -- at any price. Her strange affair with a screen idol who was 'ambisextrous' shocked all of Hollywood."
