Saturn Viewed from Titan, c. 1952
Oil on board

This is perhaps the most famous and recognized image Bonestell ever painted. This scene spotlights the same view as the famous plate XXXVI, page 132, of The Conquest of Space.
As one of his favorite subjects, Bonestell painted this fantastic view at least seven times, according to Frederick C. Durant III, conservator of the Bonestell estate. Bonestell created this piece for his daughter, Jane Webster, now deceased, who later gave the painting to Boyd Jarrell, nephew of William C. Estler, the Chesley Bonestell curator.
This painting was previewed at an exhibit of 31 Bonestell space paintings shown at the Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles in October 1957. Nine of the paintings exhibited there, including the Saturn painting, are featured in an article, which appeared in the October 1957 issue of the Griffith Observer. The painting was also exhibited at the California Academy of Sciences in 1988, and it was exhibited in the inaugural group show at the SF Museum.
This piece has been published in approximately ten publications prior to being showcased on page 59 of The Frank Collection, Paper Tiger, 1999. This scene was also used for a limited edition print.

FRANK FRAZETTA (American, b. 1928)
Warrior with Ball and Chain, Flashing Swords #1, paperback cover, 1973
Oil on board
23 x 19 in.
Signed lower right
This stirring, savage, and superb Frazetta masterwork, sometimes titled Warrior with Ball and Chain, first appeared on the cover of the sword and sorcery anthology edited by Lin Carter, Flashing Swords #1, Dell Books #2640, 1973.
One of the top Frazetta paintings in private hands, Warrior with Ball and Chain was purchased in the February 1993 Guernsey's auction, and according to its listing there, is one of the largest Frazetta covers ever painted. Some aficionados feel his piece may have been originally created for the Lancer Conan series of the late sixties, but not used there, since the Conan figures of two of the Lancer covers are so similar to the Warrior.
This iconic painting was also reproduced on page 93 of Frank Frazetta: Book Three, Bantam Books, 1977, and page 185 of Legacy: Selected Paintings and Drawings of Frank Frazetta edited by Arnie and Cathy Fenner, Underwood Books, 1999. This piece was also used for the cover of the Wilderlands of High Fantasy (Dungeons and Dragons d20 3.5 Fantasy Roleplaying, Campaign Setting) paperback by the Necromancer Games Staff, White Wolf Publishing, 2005.
Such a peak period, published cover painting featuring the ultimate subject matter by the master represents an incredible opportunity.
When asked about the piece being auctioned, Frank Frazetta has recently replied, "That is one of my better paintings and I certainly had a lot of fun with that one."
A copy of the Flashing Swords #1 paperback is included with this lot.

J. ALLEN ST. JOHN (American, 1872-1957)
Tarzan and His Mate, 1947
Oil on canvas
22.5 x 19 in.
Signed lower left
With the publication of Edgar Rice Burroughs' second Tarzan novel for McClurg, The Return of Tarzan, in 1915, J. Allen St. John's legendary association with this timeless hero set a new standard in heroic fantasy art and inspired all the Tarzan artists to come, including such noteworthy talents as Hal Foster, Burne Hogarth, Frank Frazetta, Roy Krenkel, and countless others. The vast majority of collectors consider St. John's rendition of the Lord of the Jungle to be definitive. Such magnificent oil paintings of Tarzan are virtually non-existent in the market, and the cachet of acquiring a first-rate St. John Tarzan painting cannot be overstated.
This piece was created as a private commission for (and inscribed to) the then-President of the Edgar Rice Burroughs Club, Verne (Vernell) Coriell.
This work was printed on page 101 of J. Allen St. John: An Illustrated Bibliography by Darrell Richardson, Mid-America Publishers, 1991, and it was also published as a limited edition print by Russ Cochran.

In their time, long before the rise of the native civilizations, they had terrorized a hundred worlds -- not from villainy but from folly, from tampering with the strands that held a universe together. Now the task was to uproot these Gates, destroy their potency for mischief, take horror out of the hands of the few who hungered for power by misuse of the Gates. This is the story of one such Gate and one such world."

Everything in the Garden, Sunday New York Times Arts and Leisure illustration, 1967
Ink on board
20.5 x 23 in.

The cast of Edward Albee's Broadway show Everything in the Garden, starring from left to right Robert Moore, Barry Nelson, Beatrice Straight, and Barbara Bell Geddes, is spotlighted in this sensational drawing. The show was Albee's follow-up hit to his hugely successful Breakfast at Tiffany's. Hirschfeld had an unparalleled gift for capturing the essence of a performance through his use of telling expressions and the clever layout of his designs. This superb piece exemplifies his unique talents.
This caricature, hailing from a peak period in the sixties, is signed at the lower right, along with the number three, which as any Hirschfeld aficionado knows, represents the number of times the name of his daughter, Nina, is hidden within the design.
Hirschfeld was a prolific artist whose illustrations were often showcased in the Sunday New York Times Arts and Leisure front page, as well as other periodicals, and this piece was featured on the front page of the November 26, 1967 Arts and Leisure section.
A copy of the printed piece is included with this lot.

A Mere Maid, Brown and Bigelow calendar illustration, c. late 1930s
Pastel on board
38 x 29 in.
Signed lower right
Earl Moran was a dazzling star in the pin-up world -- he was spotlighted in a Life magazine pictorial and had a famed association with Marilyn Monroe during her Blue-Book Modeling Agency years as Norma Jean.
This large, luminous, and exceedingly rare early pastel, titled A Mere Maid, was created for the Brown and Bigelow Calendar Company. This important masterwork hails from the late thirties and is a prime example of the artist's coveted and wildly successful "light and shadow" series of art deco-styled pin-ups. The commanding scale and erotically charged nude mermaid theme make this among Moran's most desirable works.
The image was also licensed for calendar use to Arrow Beer with an alternate title of The Naked Truth.
This superb pastel drawing is in a pristine state of preservation, and a published, vintage print of the image is included with the lot. This piece retains its original, stepped-gessoed, wide-profile frame, and the art is properly lined behind glass, with a partial Brown and Bigelow inventory label preserved on the back of the frame.
This masterpiece is truly "the Great American Pin-Up" personified.

This illustration is framed along side an 12.5 x 9 in. photograph inscribed,
"To my dear friend Cardwell S. Higgins -- Capt. Eddie Rickenbacker."
The highly decorated World War I flying ace and iconic American war hero Captain Eddie Rickenbacker (1890-1973) helped create and operate Eastern Airlines later in his career. In 1935, when General Motors gained ownership of Eastern Air Transport, they asked Rickenbacker to manage the company. With outside help he then merged Eastern Air Transport with Florida Airways to form Eastern Airlines. Under Rickenbacker, Eastern Airlines, based in Miami, became a major international transportation company. In 1938 when Rickenbacker learned that GM was selling Eastern he bought the company and remained as CEO until 1959. Higgins and Rickenbacker were friends prior to the forming of Eastern Airlines, and this photograph is dated 1930. This piece is known to have been one of Charles Martignette's most treasured items.
