The Then Lover
Mixed-media on board
21.5 x 15.5 in.
Signed lower right
One of the famed Red Rose Girls of the Brandywine School of American Painting, Jesse Willcox Smith may have come late to art -- she was already 20 by the time she first picked up a brush, but she more than made up for it once she found her voice. Illustration work was never in short supply for Smith, but it was after studying with Howard Pyle at Drexel University in the late 1800s that she became one of the foremost artists of the day, painting classic portraits for a variety of important magazines, most notably St. Nicholas, Scribner's, The Ladies' Home Journal, Collier's Weekly, Harper's and Century.
Her sensitive portraits of "perfect" children set the standard in commercial art. The Then Lover is a tour de force of Smiths mastery over style, substance, mood and color, as embodied by her favorite subject, a pristine young girl, as she shares a reflective moment with a doll. The image is classic Willcox Smith, and a testament to the enduring beauty of the halcyon images of Golden Age American innocence she is so famous for. This is great American art no matter how its classified - as Illustration Art, Fine Art or portraiture - and be fully at home in most any museum collection.

JOHN COLEMAN BURROUGHS (American 1913 - 1979)
John Carter of Mars comic strip illustration
Ink on paper
16 x 21 in.
Not signed
Most likely drawn as the prototype for the John Carter of Mars comic strip, this artwork represents one of the most important ERB originals known to exist. Coleman Burroughs' trademark drybrush style, which incorporated the influence of Alex Raymond, is never more evident than in this great, self-contained introduction to the freewheeling characters of the long-lasting Mars series.
Any John Carter original by Coleman Burroughs is extremely rare as the vast majority are held by the Burroughs Estate, and this example can be considered the best of the best.

Frazetta's magically assured line and sense of drama are never more evident than in this flawlessly composed drawing. The master's ever-present juxtaposition between humor and sexuality, bold design and subtle movement, loose spontaneity and astonishing precision is on sparkling display in this pen-and-ink jewel. On the back cover of Legacy: Selected Paintings and Drawings by Frank Frazetta, editor/publisher Betty Ballantine enthused, "If I were called upon to make one generalized statement about Frank Frazetta's work I would say that it fairly screams with life. Nothing that he does, in sketches or in final color is in the least static." Frazetta's peer Robert McGinnis summed it up for many fantasy fans when he wrote, "What do I think of Frank Frazetta's art? Simply put I think Frank is the best."

This piece is an original promotional illustration done for MGM studios upon the release of their 1958 movie Run Silent, Run Deep, starring Clark Gable and Burt Lancaster. The painting spotlights Lancaster in his role as submarine Lt. Jim Bledsoe. This Robert Wise war classic was an adaptation of Commander Edward L. Beach, USN's novel, published in 1955. In his acknowledgements at the start of the book, Beach thanks Charles Langello, "for his help on weekends and late at night."
Clark Hulings' illustration career was firmly established when he did this painting for MGM studios. It is the only known movie-related painting that he is has done. There has been a dramatic rise in sales prices for Clark Hulings paintings, with some of his landscape paintings reaching the $200,000 mark last year. Hulings' pieces are highly sought after by collectors, museums, and corporations. This offering is a splendid opportunity to acquire a significant painting by Hulings, who has established himself as one of the most highly regarded American realists of the last century.
"Gable and Lancaster make the seas boil in the battle adventure that hits like a torpedo!"

His radically risque portraits of sexually emancipated women were dubbed "Kirchner Girls."
Kirchner moved to New York City in 1915, and was introduced to Florence Ziegfeld by Viennese architect Josef Urban, the man responsible for the ornate Follies sets and design. Ziegfeld, always an innovator, hired Kirchner as a staff artist.
This Raphael Kirchner pastel, part of a suite of five illustrations spotlighting the erotic and luminous showgirls of the Ziegfeld Follies, is a newly discovered piece of New York City theater history. This stunning portrait of Vivienne Segal hung in the lobby of the historic Century Theater until it shut its doors in 1936.
The plaque on the period frame for this piece reads "A Ziegfeld Girl from life by Raphael Kirchner."

In the 1950s, Senator Barry Goldwater convinced Louis Lupas to visit Washington D.C., where he was soon solidly engaged creating portraits of Presidents, Senators, and members of high society. Many of Lupas' portraits were drawn from life, during portrait sittings. This stunning portrait was drawn from life - Kennedy posed for him while in office - and captures the bold vitality and charisma that made John F. Kennedy one of America's most inspiring Presidents.

This classic pulp cover painting represents Paul at his finest: a definitive image from science-fiction's pioneering early era, marked by nothing short of Earth-threatening cataclysm, vividly painted by one of the undeniable giants of the genre. On his website, Gallery of Frank R. Paul's Science Fiction Artwork, author Frank Wu notes, "In the same year as the Wonder Stories cover, Philip Wylie and Edwin Balmer published their novel, When Worlds Collide, which raises the possibility that one may have inspired the other. In their novel, two planets wander into our solar system, the first causing tidal waves and flooding on the earth, the second planet destroying our world."
The cover for the 1979 paperback edition of The Science Fiction Encyclopedia, edited by Peter Nicholls, was based on this apocalyptic scene -- out of the millions of science fiction scenes created through the ages, this was the one chosen as the symbol for science fiction.

The Bacchante, 1923
Oil on board
48 x 96 in.
Signed lower left
This huge, lushly painted work was created during St. John's peak period when he was at the height of his powers as an illustrator. Already well-known for his many successful illustrations for the popular writers of the time, St. John painted this scene, a copy of a 1909 canvas by popular turn-of-the-century British artist Arthur Wardle, to demonstrate that he was not limited to the field and could create easel paintings to rival any artist. Evocatively depicting a priestess of Bacchus in a giant field of poppies, this tableau allowed St. John's talent for pure painting free reign: the priestess's flowing robes, the graceful movement of the leopards, gorgeously rendered background, and a keyed up palette combine magically in this personal work, which is extremely rare in the marketplace. The painting hung in St. John's Tree Studio in Chicago from the time of its creation until 1985 when it was purchased by noted Burroughs collector Russ Cochran. The carved wood frame was also created by St. John.
Please note that Heritage does not have possession of this painting, so we are unable to provide a first-hand condition report. The winning bidder will need to make shipping arrangements directly with the consignor.

Saunders continued his art training there, studying with Harvey Dunn at the Grand Central School of Art. After serving in the military in World War II, he returned to pulp and paperback illustration.

William Timlin was educated in England but emigrated to South Africa before 1915 and studied art there. He exhibited frequently in South Africa, where he worked as an architect. A multi-talented, creative artist, Timlin wrote stories, composed music, illustrated magazines, conjured up watercolor fantasies, painted, and did some printmaking. His celebrated book, The Ship That Sailed to Mars, was published in 1923. For many fantasy art aficionados, the 48 superb color plates, alternated with 48 leaves of fine calligraphic and poetic text for the book, have placed Timlin among the "top ten" of fantasy illustrators. Timlin's work has been described by some as "a magical combination of science fiction and fairyland,"a visionary blend that has secured him a place alongside such giants of fantasy art as Arthur Rackham, W. Heath Robinson, Edmond Dulac, and Kay Nielsen.

Blue Dog With Flower Pot
Oil on canvas
36 x 48 in.
Signed lower left
Hailing from New Iberia, Louisiana, Cajun artist George Rodrigue is now world-famous for his Blue Dog series. Rodrigue displayed an early talent for art, and he studied at the University of Southwestern Louisiana and in Los Angeles at the Art Center College of Design. For a time, Rodrigue painted in an Abstract Expressionist manner, but soon returned to painting scenes which reflected his Cajun culture, including paintings based on folk tales and bayou and swamp landscapes.
People magazine has dubbed Rodrigue's Blue Dog paintings "the hottest fad in popular art since Walter Keane's big-eyed waifs in the 1960s." Well known celebrities such as Hillary Rodham Clinton and Whoopi Goldberg are among the fervent collectors of Blue Dogs. Through his vibrant paintings, Rodrigue has transformed his beloved, long-deceased childhood pet, Tiffany, from a frisky black and white-furred terrier/spaniel into Blue Dog. With these hugely popular works, Rodrigue strives to capture the back-and-forth of both man and beast as they strive for true communication with a level of understanding that goes beyond their differences.
This wonderful Blue Dog painting is sure to speak to any fan of Rodrigue's sublime canine companion.

This illustration appeared on the cover of Nelson Nye's Western novel, Trouble at Quinn's Crossing, Ace Books, 1971.
"When the little drummer rode his wagon into Quinn's crossing, few could have foreseen the load of trouble it carried. Horatio Gill, Grudden's Number One, was small but deadly. The product he brought to Quinn's Crossing had sparked many a range war. But Gill's goal in life was to sell barbed wire and he didn't care what happened to the people he sold it to. But Quinn's Crossing was a tight little town, and it was very questionable whether anyone would buy his wire. More than likely they would hang him on it. And even if that ace salesman pulled another coup for Grudden there was no saying that he would be allowed to hang fence without getting some powdersmoke-propelled barbs in his back."

VIETNAMESE WAR PROPAGANDA POSTER PAINTING
Hoan Ho Mien Bac Thang To, c. 1960s
Acrylic on paper
25 x 18.5 in.
Not Signed
The method of mixing party fervor with art began with Ho Chi Minh's rousing 1951 directive, and the effects are still seen on the streets of Vietnam today. Propaganda art is not "high art," but something produced to motivate -- a conduit of information, intended to get a message across as clearly as possible. These paintings were created during the war years and were produced using scarce materials. Vietnamese propaganda art is unlike that of any other nation. The art is unique and starting to be recognized world-wide. In its heyday during the war, both art and the entire country were in upheaval, and the images produced were most evocative. This might be the only time you see original art like this offered at auction. This slogan in this painting translates as, "Hurray to the North's great victory, 4000 American war planes shot down."
