ROBERT KENNEDY ABBETT (American, b. 1926)
John Carter of Mars #4, Thuvia, Maid of Mars, rare variant paperback cover, c. 1963
Mixed media on board
28.75 x 19.5 in.
Not signed
This illustration appeared on the cover of the fourth book of Edgar Rice Burroughs' John Carter of Mars series, Thuvia, Maid of Mars. However the history of this cover is unique -- it is the only John Carter cover painted by Bob Abbett that was not used for the 1963 editions (only the last book of the John Carter of Mars series was published in 1965). This painting was considered too risqué for publication in 1963, so a new cover was created and used for the title. This piece, the variant cover, though created in 1963, was not published until the 1969 edition of the book (Ballantine #01524), and it is considered to be not only the cover of choice by collectors, but an exceedingly uncommon edition of the book.

From the Collection of Betty Ballantine.

ROLF ARMSTRONG (American, 1889-1960)
The Enchantress, pin-up illustration
Oil on canvas
80 x 60 in.
Signed lower right
The Enchantress is one in a series of four famous monumental Art Deco oil paintings that Rolf Armstrong created for the Brown and Bigelow calendar company between the years 1925 and 1929. Titled The Enchantress, The Song of India, Arabian Nights, and Carmen, Armstrong created these magnificent erotic masterworks after his return from Paris, perhaps inspired by the Parisian salon movement.

Armstrong's importance to pin-up art was aptly noted by Janet Dobson and Michael Wooldridge in their 2001 monograph Pin-Up Dreams: The Glamour Art of Rolf Armstrong, "Rolf Armstrong's first calendar pin-up, Dream Girl (1919), set the tone and defined the vision of ideal feminine beauty for the next four decades. His extraordinary success and prolific career garnered him praise and fame of the sort normally reserved for more public figures. One account tells of the thundering applause that met his appearance at a conference in St. Paul, Minnesota, in 1943; he also gained the praise and admiration of such famous figures as Norman Rockwell and James Cagney."

"Meet Mitchell Courtenay -- Copysmith Star Class -- a man of no small importance in the Madison Avenue pecking order. His latest assignment: create an advertising campaign that will sell the American people on emigrating to Venus. It's an uphill fight all the way for Courtenay, as he contends with enemies in rival agencies, with underground ecology groups -- and with a wife who won't come home unless he quits his job. And what if Courtenay is successful? Suppose the climate of Venus proves harsh and uninviting? And how will the colonists from Earth feel when they learn they will have to survive as best they can, with no help from home? Mitchell Courtenay didn't care as long as he did his job and got his bonus. Then someone tried to sell him a bill of goods, and Mitch suddenly had to work hard to keep on living."

Amelia Earhart, Town and Country cover, February 1, 1933
Oil on canvas
60 x 40 in.
Signed lower left
The supremely talented Howard Chandler Christy arrived in New York in 1890, to attend the Art Students League where he studied with William Merritt Chase. Later in his career, after a successful stint in book and magazine illustration, Christy specialized in painting Presidents, society's grand dames, Hollywood stars, and Army Generals. The roaring twenties brought a demand for portrait artists -- many notables sought their immortality on canvas. It was at this point, that Christy turned away from illustration and moved into the field of portraiture. Among his most celebrated subjects were Presidents Franklin Roosevelt, Calvin Coolidge, and Herbert Hoover, and past Presidents James Garfield, Martin Van Buren, and James Polk. Christy also painted such news-making celebrities as Will Rogers, Eddie Rickenbacker, and Amelia Earhart.

A poem by Ben Riddie attached verso:
"From Howard Chandler Christy to Amelia Earhart
I have painted you/ Against the reaches of the sky./ We sail together, you and I./ Great dreams come true./ Beyond the head winds of fate,/ Beyond my creative art/ We, who dare the start/ Know the happy ending, tho we wait/ So I have painted you/ In your rich brief moment to find/ A loving niche of all of human kind/ So I have painted you."

This illustration was first published in Lloyd Cassel Douglass's 1952 novel The Big Fisherman.

"Fara did not smile or speak. Slowly leaving her place she walked with determined steps to the massive table. The audience leaned forward and held its breath wondering what was about to happen. Moving around the table until she faced the King, Fara made a deep bow. Then, to the amazement of everyone, she whipped a little dagger from her belt and deftly drew a red streak diagonally across her left forearm. Bending over the long neglected, unsigned vow of vengeance, she took up the stylus, dipped it in her blood, and wrote FARA."

Harvey Dunn's sensuous nudes were highly influential on the pin-up and glamour artists, especially Gil Elvgren. As historians Charles G. Martignette and Louis K. Meisel noted in Gil Elvgren All His Glamorous Pin-Ups, when a Dunn nude was exhibited at the Guild Artists Bureau in New York, "George Baker the gallery's director invited the public to vote in five categories: best company on a desert island; best company in a desert; best company; best; and 'Whew.' Dunn's painting had won in all five categories."

Gil Elvgren only painted nudes occasionally, and as a result they are extremely desirable among die-hard Elvgren collectors. Note that this piece is inscribed, "To my good friend Harold, Gil". Elvgren gifted the painting to silent screen icon Harold Lloyd, an incredible association for this painting. Lloyd was himself a respected pin-up photographer, capturing images of such glamorous icons as Marilyn Monroe and Bettie Page. As the authors note in Gil Elvgren All His Glamorous American Pin-Ups ,"Because of Elvgren's great popularity, Brown and Bigelow often used him for special promotions. Elvgren had the opportunity to meet many people, including a number of celebrities, some of whom became close friends. One such was film star Harold Lloyd, who, about 1950, introduced Elvgren to 35mm stereo color photography."

"Most all of the illustrations herein contain a certain amount of action which is suggested by the theme and the models' expressions, rather than the pose. That is because the model cannot hold action poses long enough for the artist to sketch properly. Quick sketches in action are good practice; but to do a finished painting you must work from photos of models in action."

"It was one of those motels so common along the turnpike, but it had its special features. Pretty Vinnie, for instance, who attracted men like Joe Stacy more than their wives did. Naturally he stopped by often. So did couples like Jane and Bruce, both married -- but not to each other. On the night the blizzard burst over the highway, all were marooned -- and the isolation killed inhibition. A pair of travelers, Virginia and Sally, found themselves sharing a single bed. Lydia Lane was ready to spend the night with anyone. Even Barbara, Joe's beautiful wife, showed up -- with another man."

Being with other girls was a mockery. Only finding Aileen again could save him, but when he did, he found that it was too late!"

JESSIE WILLCOX SMITH (American, 1863-1935)
A Child's Garden of Verses, book illustration, 1905
Mixed media on paperboard
33.5 x 23 in.
Signed lower right
This delightful piece hails from one of Jessie Willcox Smith's most important projects, and the masterfully composed, swirling composition is one of her most intricate, nothing less than a glowing celebration of childhood--and motherhood.

One of America's greatest illustrators, Jessie Willcox Smith attended the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and studied under Thomas Eakins in Philadelphia, and graduating in 1888. A year later, she found work in the production department of the Ladies' Home Journal, for five years. After that, she continued her art education with classes under Howard Pyle, first at Drexel and then at the Brandywine School.

Smith then established her reputation, illustrating stories and articles for Century, Collier's Weekly, Leslie's Weekly, Harper's, McClure's, Scribner's, and the Ladies' Home Journal. Smith was closely associated with the artists Elizabeth Shippen Green and Violet Oakley, who also studied with Pyle, and the group became known as "The Red Rose Girls." Smith's papers are deposited in the collection of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. From 1918 through 1932, Smith illustrated covers exclusively for Good Housekeeping magazine.

As Jessie Willcox Smith biographer S. Michael Schnessel has aptly observed, "Jessie Willcox Smith was the creator of the ideal child. She pictured a child that was without equal in reality -- innocent, unblemished, never naughty, always perfect. Smith's touching, sensitive portraits of children at play won her the hearts of millions of Americans."

This illustration appeared on page 116 of Robert Louis Stevenson's book, A Child's Garden of Verses, Charles Scribner's Sons, 1905.

Smith's unparallel talent for figure painting with personality is on full display in this charming group portrait.

Duotone Varga Signature, 1947

This stunning pin-up is one of the most iconic Vargas images we've ever had the pleasure to offer.

Alberto Vargas created Varga Enterprises soon after he left Esquire magazine. The visionary artist began creating distinctive logos based on his signature to create branded products during the fifties before he went to work for Playboy magazine. This painting of a young, scantily attired woman lying on her back with her legs raised to form the "V" in the Varga signature is a rare example, one of two known paintings made with the "Varga" signature as a key design element.

Just Add Mistletoe, Playboy Vargas Girl pin-up illustration, March 1971
Watercolor on illustration board

This sizzling centerfold hails from a peak period, the swinging seventies.

"So that's what right on means."

Great American Pin-Up author Charles G. Martignette noted, "From the time America was introduced to the Varga Girl in 1940, the name Vargas has been synonymous with pin-up and glamour art. In fact, the word 'vargas' has actually been applied to almost every kind of pin-up subject -- a fitting tribute to the most famous and prolific glamour artist of all time."

In 1957, Playboy magazine published a pictorial feature on Vargas' nudes, and publisher Hugh Hefner soon extended an invitation to showcase Vargas' work monthly in Playboy.

Embarking on this landmark association in 1960, Vargas ultimately painted 152 works for Playboy. In addition to his famous centerfolds, Vargas created two front cover images for Playboy during his long reign as the magazine's most celebrated artist.
