ANTONIO VOLPE
A Stained Beechwood and Cane "Egg" Rocker, model no. 267, manufactured by the Società Anonima Antonio Volpe, Udineca, circa 1922

A. Duncan, Modernism: Modernist Design 1880 - 1940, Minneapolis, 1998, p. 201.

Until 1987 the design of this rocking chair was considered to be a work by Josef Hoffmann. The same year an original catalogue of bentwood furniture manufactured by the firm of Antonio Volpe discovered, showing this chair as model no. 267 without any reference to the designer. Antonio Volpe was one of the many businessmen in the second half of the 19th century that recognized the commercial viability of the bentwood market and established a firm in 1883 to compete with the successful Thonet firm. His firm existed until 1940.

Many of the chair's design characteristics justify the former attribution to Josef Hoffmann. Who besides Hoffmann could create such a clean and and yet erotic design? It resembles a rocking variant of Hoffmann's "Sitzmaschine". Armrests and rocker are combined into an aerodynamic oval enclosing the seat and the adjustable backrest. The slanted elements inside the oval supports not only provide the necessary structural support but also impart a visual feeling of mobility. The negative voids created by the chair's linear elements do not obstruct the room in the manner most traditional seating furniture do. A result is the perfect harmony between room and subject similar to the aesthetic of tubular metal furniture of the 1920s.

The two had a workshop and a retail space in Paris (at 122 Champs Elysées), creating highly exclusive items ranging from furniture to decorative accessories. They also offered an interior design service. They created designs for Worth (Paris) and Chanel, and collaborated with Robert Mallet-Stevens, Djo Bourgeois, and Jean-Michel Frank. In 1912, George Washington Maher designed Rockledge, a summer residence near Homer, Minnesota, for E.L. King. Sited just beneath a cliff along the Mississippi River, Rockledge is considered the finest residence of Maher's career and a perfect example of his motif-rhythm theory of architectural design.

Kaplan, ed., The Art that is Life: The Arts and Crafts Movement in America, 1875-1920, Boston, 1987, pp. 396-400; J. Maher Quarterly, October-December 1992, pp. 1, 16, and 17; and Arts, December 1995, The Minneapolis Institute of Arts, cover and back cover.

FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT
An Oak Reclining Armchair, designed for the William E. Martin House, Oak Park, Illinois, circa 1902
28 x 29 x 33 inches (71.1 x 73.7 x 83.8 cm)

PROVENANCE:
Barbra Streisand Collection.

Frank Lloyd Wright created this chair for the house he designed in 1902 in Oak Park, Illinois, for William E. Martin, co-owner with his brother, Darwin, of the E-Z Polish Company. The intriguing, successful design of Martin's house brought Wright eight other major commissions, including one for the Martin brothers' own E-Z Polish factory. Darwin Martin was employed by the Larkin Company in Buffalo, New York, and he convinced the company to have Wright design their new administration building. Darwin also commissioned Wright to build his home with a gardener's cottage in Buffalo, New York, and his summer residence in Derby, New York. In Buffalo, Wright additionally completed homes for George Barton, Darwin's brother-in-law, and for W.R. Heath and for Alexander Davidson, both Larkin Company employees.

It was in the Chicago suburb of Oak Park, where William Martin lived and used this chair, that Wright developed and perfected his signature "Prairie style," the basis of 20th-century residential design in the United States. Wright's Prairie style featured structures with low-lying exteriors and open, light-filled interiors, where the manmade was meant to resonate with the surrounding natural environment.

Understanding Wright's philosophy concerning the relationship between architecture and interior design is especially essential for appreciating this chair. According to Wright, a home's materials, windows, lighting, furniture, and exterior setting, as much as its architectural framework, equally contributed to the overall design concept and the ultimate success of the commission. In fact, Wright believed that the home, in its entirety, had the power to "shape" its residents.

An Important and Unique Bronze Table, designed by Edward C. Moore, circa 1875
Stamped under top: Tiffany & Co, 0304 Makers 5248, M
33-1/4 inches (84.5 cm) high

This Japanesque table was designed by Edward C. Moore around 1875, very probably as an exhibition piece for Tiffany & Company's display at the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition of 1876. It is, to my knowledge, the largest known work by Edward C. Moore and bears all the signature design elements of his early Japanesque style of the first years of the 1870s before he turned to mixed metals in preparation for the Paris Exposition Universelle of 1878, where his Japanesque silver won the grand prize. (Moore was Tiffany & Co.'s head designer from circa 1853 until 1891, and one of the greatest decorative artists in American history.)

ISAMU NOGUCHI (American, 1904-1988)
Neo Lithic, 1982

72 x 29 x 16 inches (182.9 x 73.7 x 40.6 cm)
From the Gemini GEL USA edition of 18
Welded signature and date to side: I.N. 82

LITERATURE:
M. McClure, Isamu Noguchi at Gemini 1982-1983, Los Angeles, 1983, p. 42.

In 1958, on the topic of sculpture, Isamu Noguchi wrote, "It is clear why so many sculptors have turned to the welding torch and the scrap heap. The effect of wreckage ties it to time continuity, welding reincarnates it as a creation." In the same essay, he wrote that "sculpture in the traditional sense is, by definition, something with built-in values of permanence, 'forever beautiful', something of shape and material that 'defy time.'" Illuminating observations such as these give us insight into the genius that has made Isamu Noguchi one of the most significant sculptors of the twentieth-century.

The Japanese- American Isamu Noguchi was born in 1904, and his first art-related job was in 1922, when he served as an apprentice to a sculptor. It was during his college years at Columbia University, where he was studying medicine, that he decided to change course and pursue his love of art. A Guggenheim Fellowship supported his sojourn to Paris from 1927-1928, which left the greatest mark on his career. Not only did he serve as a studio assistant to Constantine Brancusi but he also began to create abstract stone and wood sculptures. This work was exhibited when he returned to New York in 1929, at the Eugene Schoen Gallery.

Over the course of his career, which spanned seven decades, Noguchi experimented with materials such as paper, stone, wood, slate, ceramics, and iron. The medium was often dictated by the environment. It is no wonder that the sculptor associated metal and industrial fabrication with America. Noguchi once wrote. "It seemed to me absurd to be working with rocks and stones in New York, where walls of glass and steel are our horizon, and our landscape is that of boxes piled high in the air."

During his career, Noguchi worked with metal on several occasions. Beginning in the late Twenties, during his first trip to Paris, and then again in the late Fifties upon his return to New York from Paris, where he worked on the UNESCO Headquarters gardens.

Noguchi's large-scale public sculpture and fountains were also made of metal. The most famous example is perhaps "News" (1938-1940), the stainless- steel relief for the Associated Press Building at Rockefeller Center. In the early 1980s, he created sculpture made of galvanized steel. This was a material that Noguchi had not previously utilized in his sculptural work.

Gemini G.E.L, established in 1966, is a workshop for artists and has been responsible for the publication of limited edition prints and sculpture. Gemini has worked with numerous celebrated artists to bring their work to fruition. Noguchi's collaboration with Gemini G.E.L began in 1982. He completed twenty-eight sculptural editions. With the exception of two, all were made of galvanized steel.
