| 73035 | FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT (American, 1867-1959) An Oak Reclining Armchair, designed for the William E. Martin House, Oak Park, Illinois, circa 1902 28 x 29 x 33 inches (71.1 x 73.7 x 83.8 cm) PROVENANCE: Barbra Streisand Collection. Frank Lloyd Wright created this chair for the house he designed in 1902 in Oak Park, Illinois, for William E. Martin, co-owner with his brother, Darwin, of the E-Z Polish Company. The intriguing, successful design of Martin's house brought Wright eight other major commissions, including one for the Martin brothers' own E-Z Polish factory. Darwin Martin was employed by the Larkin Company in Buffalo, New York, and he convinced the company to have Wright design their new administration building. Darwin also commissioned Wright to build his home with a gardener's cottage in Buffalo, New York, and his summer residence in Derby, New York. In Buffalo, Wright additionally completed homes for George Barton, Darwin's brother-in-law, and for W.R. Heath and for Alexander Davidson, both Larkin Company employees. It was in the Chicago suburb of Oak Park, where William Martin lived and used this chair, that Wright developed and perfected his signature "Prairie style," the basis of 20th-century residential design in the United States. Wright's Prairie style featured structures with low-lying exteriors and open, light-filled interiors, where the manmade was meant to resonate with the surrounding natural environment. Understanding Wright's philosophy concerning the relationship between architecture and interior design is especially essential for appreciating this chair. According to Wright, a home's materials, windows, lighting, furniture, and exterior setting, as much as its architectural framework, equally contributed to the overall design concept and the ultimate success of the commission. In fact, Wright believed that the home, in its entirety, had the power to "shape" its residents. Not Sold. |

| 73089 | VIKTOR SCHRECKENGOST (American) "Poor Man's Bowl" (from the Jazz Bowl series), A Glazed Earthenware Bowl, manufactured by Cowan Pottery Studio, circa 1931 Signed in the body of the bowl: VIKTOR SCHRECKENGOST Impressed on the base: COWAN with the firm's mark 8-1/2 x 13-3/4 inches (21.6 x 34.9 cm) PROVENANCE: Private collection, Cleveland. EXHIBITED: The Cleveland Museum of Art, "Viktor Schreckengost and 20th-Century Design", November 12, 2000-February 4, 2001. LITERATURE: H. Adams, Viktor Schreckengost and 20th-Century Design, Cleveland, 2000, p. 91(this example). "It was the bottom of the Depression and the Cowan Pottery Studio where I worked part time for Guy Cowan, my former teacher, received a number of letters requesting specific types of products from various galleries. I remember picking up one request from a gallery in New York City asking for a large punch bowl with a New York theme. I thought about it awhile and felt that the City of New York reflected the excitement and energy of jazz music. I listened to a lot of it when I had visited the city.. A week after the bowl was shipped, the gallery called to say that the lady who ordered it was so pleased that she wanted to order two more. She said that her husband Franklin loved it, too. One was to be sent to her house in Hyde Park, New York, and the other was to the White House in Washington. The lady was, of course, Eleanor Roosevelt. So I knew, too, that FDR was running seriously for president...." Quoted in M. Favermann, "Viktor Schreckengost: An American Design Giant," The Journal of Antiques and Collectibles, January 2001, pp. 27-29. There were eventually three different versions of what became known as the Jazz Bowl. Henry Adams describes the process of creating this version, also known as The Poor Man's Bowl , in Viktor Schreckengost and 20th -Century Design: "He worked from a plaster positive of the punch bowl's shape and carved the "jazz" design in relief, including an element that does not appear in the earlier bowls, his signature, which he ran across the label of a liquor bottle. His carving dug away the background, leaving the central motifs in relief. A plaster mold was then made from this positive, which also had a depressed background with raised foreground designs. The cast bowls were then covered with black engobe, and the dried engobe was scraped off the surface with a steel tool, creating a design that was black in the background areas and white in the foreground. Then came the bisque firing, followed by the application of a crackle glaze." The bowls were made in four colors: Egyptian blue (the majority), black, guava yellow, and melon green. This example is one of two known produced in melon green. This series of ceramics executed by Schreckengost is undoubtedly a collective icon of the Art Deco movement, and arguably the most important ceramic work of the 20th century.Sold for: $77,675.00. |

| 73127 | PHILIPPE HIQUILY (French, b. 1925) Exceptional Office of Semi-Circular Form (Desk with Lamp), circa 1960 Transparent smoked altuglass with five gilt and hammered metal feet with ovoid lamp of flattened out and hammered gilt metal 85 x 33-1/2 x 39 inches (215.9 x 85.1 x 99.1 cm) PROVENANCE: Commissioned from Hiquily by Teddy van Zuylen, Paris, circa 1960; Galerie des Chevau-Légers (Commissaires-Priseurs Perrin, Royère, Lajeunesse), Versailles, June 27, 1985, lot 131; Private collection, California. LITERATURE: Connaissance des Arts, 1985, p. 77, illus. in color (this desk); P. Cabanne, Hiquily: Bronzes et Mobiliers, Paris, 2005, p. 84, illus. (this desk). The French modernist sculptor, Philippe Hiquily, worked for a full decade creating abstract figurative sculpture before turning his attention in 1960 to making furniture from his favorite sculptural material: metal. Interestingly, the shift followed closely on the heels of a major honor which cemented his artistic prominence: in 1959 he won the prestigious Critic's Prize for sculpture at the Paris Biennial. Although in the abstract, the concept of designing chairs and desks and tables would appear to be a radical departure from the creation of non-utilitarian sculpture, it was not--in Hiquily's case. His furniture, of which this custom-made altuglass and gilt metal desk is an outstanding early example from circa 1960, is an extension of his work in sculpture. In fact, Hiquily's choice to create furniture in an ambitious way ended up informing his later, even more technically challenging sculptural efforts. His seats and surfaces, where he intends for people to share food and drink, and perform their intellectual work, carry with them all of the artist's sculptural preoccupations and enthusiasms. His mobiliers are every bit as beautifully crafted, and as overtly erotic, as his sculptures which take as their point of departure, almost without fail, the human (female) body in sexually ecstatic positions. As one writer noted, Hiquily's furniture is "dream-like and surrealist in spirit." This semicircular desk, created in 1961 for the businessman Teddy van Zuylen, creates an environment with two basic materials--smoked altuglass and gilt metal. The "legs" of the desk thicken as they approach the floor to become substantial feet upon which the ethereal transparent writing surface sits. To fully integrate the two materials which form discrete horizontal and vertical planes (one transparent and one opaque), Hiquily the sculptor pierces the surface of the desk with a narrowed extension of one of the legs. Once it penetrates the hole in the altuglass, the metal leg swells once again to form a neck bearing another enlarged form--the desk lamp containing an enormous eye. This element is as whimsical and surreal as a painting by Dali or Magritte, or a sculpture by Jean Tinguely whose atelier Hiquily frequented as a young artist. When illuminated, the glowing eye both literally and metaphorically sees and assists the person at the desk in seeing more clearly. Hiquily's artistry helps provide vision--or a vision--for the fortunate occupant of the desk. Philippe Hiquily's work in sculpture and sculptural furniture is represented in numerous museums worldwide including, among others, the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Hirshhorn Museum, Washington, D.C.; the Centre Georges-Pompidou, Paris; the Guggenheim Museum, New York; and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Montreal. | 73137 | LINO TAGLIAPIETRA (Italian, b. 1934) "Festa Della Sensa" A Filigrana and Battuto Glass Boat-Form Sculpture, 1998 Engraved on the side: Lino Tagliapietra 98 65-1/2 inches (166.4 cm) long Lino Tagliapietra is an Italian glass artist born in 1934 on the island of Murano. Murano, an island whose history of glass dates back to 1291, provided Lino with the perfect educational environment to hone his craft. At the age of 12, Lino was apprenticed by the glass maestro Archimede Seguso. Nine years later, at age 21, he himself had earned the rank of maestro. For the next 25 years, he worked in association with several of Murano's top glass factories. Lino's influence to the American art glass studio movement is primarily attributed to his friend Dale Chihuly. In 1979, Lino came to the United States to teach at the Pilchuck Glass Studio in Washington. This marked the beginning of knowledge sharing among the American glass artists and the Italian maestros, who in the past had guarded their techniques as valuable trade secrets. The first exhibition to honor his work, Lino Tagliapietra in Retrospect: A Modern Renaissance in Italian Glass is presently being shown at the Smithsonian American Art Museum's Renwick Gallery in Washington, D.C. It will also appear at the Chrysler Museum of Art in Norfolk, Virginia; the Palm Springs Art Museum in Palm Springs, California; and the Museum of Arts and Design in New York.Sold for: $11,950.00. |

LITERATURE: L.E. Schmeckebier, John Steuart Curry's Pageant of America, New York, 1943, no. 112, p. 169. This lot is accompanied by a copy of the Schmeckebier monograph on John Steuart Curry. Schmeckebier compares the Portrait of Stanley Young to two of Curry's self-portraits of 1927 and 1937: "His portrait of the writer Stanley Young before a typewriter at the window of his studio is undoubtedly an adequate representation of the struggling artist, but at the same time it reveals a half humorous, half sympathetic attitude of the painter which takes serious form in his own portrait." Schmeckebier illustrates the Portrait of Stanley Young with notes on the painting: "A portrait, conceived half humorously yet with deep sincerity, of a young writer who loved to dramatize himself as a great artist. The heavy arm and clenched fist, the hand supporting the head, are well-known gestures that imply such a 'struggle.' The placement of the figure before the studio window with the hazy landscape outside, however, carries many of the same associations noted in the studio Still Life and the First Snow [two of Curry's other paintings]." Also accompanied by two letters from the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution. The first is a letter from Stanley Young to John Steuart Curry, dated January 17, 1946. Young inquires, "By the way, what ever happened to that portrait of mine that you did? Was it printed in the biography of your work [Schmeckebier, John Steuart Curry's Pageant of America, New York, 1943]?" The second letter contains Curry's response. Stanley Young was a playwright, author, and literary critic for the New York Times, circa 1940s-1950s. Two plays written by Young were "Laurette" and "Mr. Pickwick." Additionally, Young, having served on the board of Farrar, Straus Publishing Company in New York for several years, acquired a partnership in the publishing company, and in 1951 the company was renamed Farrar, Straus, Young Publishing Company, Inc. John Steuart Curry, a leader in the American Regionalist movement, was born on a farm near Dunavant, Kansas. After receiving a thorough education in art, including attending the Kansas City Art Institute, the Art Institute of Chicago, and Geneva College in Pennsylvania, he moved to New York to study illustration with Harvey Dunn. Finding it difficult to make ends meet as an artist, he moved to Paris, with a patron's support, and spent the next year studying at Schoukhaieff's Russian Academy, where his artistic interest lay with the work of Gustav Courbet and Peter Paul Reubens rather than of the burgeoning expressionist and abstract movements that influenced many of his peers. Upon returning to the States, he embraced the Midwest values of his youth and began incorporating these into his work. His first major Regionalist painting, Baptism in Kansas, garnered him much critical acclaim and recognition from the New York art world. Art historian Matthew Baigell stated, "To Curry, man's actions on the land, his contest with nature for dominance, was the basic American experience. Curry recognized the capacities of both - nature's ability to devastate the land and man's ability to bring great riches from the soil." Within these scenes of man's interactions with nature and much of Curry's other works, there is an underlying religious theme combined with a yearn for nostalgia. Not Sold. |

Gontcharova 10-1/4 x 6-5/8 inches (26.0 x 16.8 cm) PROVENANCE: Selected Artists Galleries, New York (label verso). According to Dr. Anthony Parton of Durham University, who is writing a catalogue raisonné on the artist, this work was likely executed between 1925-1935 for a carpet design (the date of 1912 was probably added later) for the Maison Myrbor in Paris, operated by Marie Cuttoli. This excerpt was taken from the Textile Society of America Website: Marie Cuttoli: Patron of Modern Textiles, by Virginia Gardner Troy Marie Cuttoli (1879-1973) was an editor, collector, proprietor of her boutique Myrbor, and patron of the arts par excellence from the 1920s through the 1950s. She contributed to modernist developments in cross-cultural discourses in textiles through her work with Algerian textile artisans who produced finely crafted embroidered and woven work based on designs by European modernists such as Natalia Goncharova. These works were subsequently sold at Cuttoli's Parisian boutique, Myrbor, primarily during the 1920s. During the 1930s and after, she played an essential role in reviving the rich pictorial tapestry tradition in France though her innovative and collaborative work with modern artists - such as Pablo Picasso, Fernand Léger, Jean Lurçat, and Le Corbusier - and skilled Aubusson weavers. She played a particularly important role in inspiring the artist Jean Lurçat to devote most of his long career to tapestry; their collaborations in the 1920s led both of them to envision modern tapestry in completely new ways. Cuttoli's contribution to modern art has been sadly neglected. Her collection of tapestries was received with great acclaim in Europe and American in the late 1930s, but after that the art of pictorial tapestry and the work of Marie Cuttoli seem to have taken a backseat to other developments in modern art, particularly those involving Abstract Expressionist painting. This paper will provide a much-needed summary of Cuttoli's work, and will present a fully researched compilation of the objects d'art, carpets, fashion, and tapestries that she supported. Attention will be paid to her instigation of new visual forms, techniques, venues and interior design through the textile media and how her ideas shaped the ideas of her artistic collaborators. Not Sold. |

Bauer was associated with artists of the Galerie Der Strum by the 1910s, most notably Kandinsky, who would have a profound effect on Bauer's work. He exhibited with the Société Anonyme in Paris, an influential group of avant-garde artists concerned with abstraction and non-objective painting. He was arrested by the Nazis in 1937 as a degenerate artist. A major portion of his work was tied up in a deal involving Solomon R.Guggenheim and Hila Rebay, and until somewhat recently was unseen. | 73221 | AD REINHARDT (American, 1913-1967) Abstract Painting, Blue, 1952 Oil on canvas Signed in pencil lower right: ReinHaRDT1952 36 x 24 inches (91.4 x 61.0 cm) PROVENANCE: Purchased directly from the artist by Ethel Epstein; Thence by descent to the present owner. Ad Reinhardt joined the American Abstract Artists in 1937, which was arguably the most important group of abstract painters assembled in the world. Despite its namesake, the group was not exclusive to American painters. One of its co-founders was Hungarian Lazlo Moholy-Nagy, and other influential members included Dutch painter Piet Mondrian and German artist Josef Albers. Joining the AAA was a defining moment of Reinhardt's career, because it cemented his commitment to abstract painting. Throughout the 1930s, Reinhardt painted bold abstract compositions, which he called "late-classical-mannerist-post-cubist, geometric abstractions". Highly competent as a painter and armed with a deep understanding of abstract theory and its underlying formal structures, he began to participate in New York exhibitions. By the early 1940s, Reinhardt was exhibiting regularly at the Betty Parsons Gallery in New York, a center for the burgeoning abstract expressionist movement. His over-all compositions and calligraphic-patterned paintings, pointed to an alliance with the abstract expressionist painters. In retrospect, this could be seen as a diversion or simply a step in the formative process, but in either case, Reinhardt abandoned that path. It was in the very early 1950s when he came home as a painter. He moved toward strict geometric purity, creating symmetrical, rectangular shapes in single color schemes, moving from red to blue to black. From that time until his death in 1967, Reinhardt continued to simplify and purify his paintings, creating solemn, reductivist canvases for which he is best known. Reinhardt was a major influence on minimal, conceptual, and monochrome painting, and wrote and lectured extensively on the subject. In his Art as Art , Reinhardt wrote, "A fine artist has no use for use, no meaning for meaning, and no need for need." He also said that art history ended with his black paintings. Reinhardt was known for his edgy sense of humor, but this comment reveals that he was satisfied by what he had accomplished with the paintings done in the 1950s. He truly felt he had achieved what he set out to do. Abstract painting, Blue is an excellent example of his best period of work, as well as an important representation of minimal abstract painting. ERRATUM: The following painting is being sold as an authentic work by Ad Reinhardt. The pencil inscription on the front of the painting was most likely added later and bears no weight upon the statement of authenticity. Not Sold. |

| 73233 | FRANZ KLINE (American, 1910-1962) Untitled (Abstract Composition in Green) Oil on canvas Signed lower right: KLINE Monogrammed verso 10 x 8-1/4 inches (25.4 x 21.0 cm) Franz Kline was an American painter mainly associated with the Abstract Expressionists centered in and around New York during the 1950s. In the 1940s, however, Kline was particularly interested in the clown as subject matter. He painted a series of paintings of the dancer Nijinsky in the role of Petroushka. Kline identified with clowns, and the tragedy of life, and there was a clear element of self-portraiture in these works. His transition from figurative works into abstraction was also revealed during this period. This work, which appears to be closely associated with the Nijinsky paintings, is toward the end of that transition. The figure, although still somewhat recognizable as a clown, is nearly completely abstracted. His increased interest in the brushwork viewed as abstract texture is more evident here than in the earlier works. He is still using color to differentiate forms in this work, but has reduced the palette to one that is severely monochromatic. Sold for: $16,730.00. |
| 73234 | WAYNE THIEBAUD (American, b. 1920) The Duchess, 1953 Mixed media on board Signed and dated lower right: Thiebaud 1953 40 x 30 inches (101.6 x 76.2 cm) PROPERTY OF SUSANNAH ROBINSON, DAUGHTER OF PATRICIA THIEBAUD, LATE WIFE OF WAYNE THIEBAUD The present work is a fantasy portrait of Thiebaud's first wife, Patti Auden Thiebaud, with whom he was married for 17 years. He always referred to Patti as "The Duchess". Wayne Thiebaud is a California painter best known for iconic still-lifes depicting All-American foods and products such as cakes, pies, sandwiches, cosmetics, and toys. His work is characterized by the use of fat brushstrokes and exaggerated colors to depict his subjects, as well as use of the well-defined shadows characteristic of advertising. This style owes to a background in commercial art and cartooning early in his career. Although he has been frequently associated with Pop Art due to his choice of subject matter, Thiebaud does not consider himself a Pop artist. His painting does not critique American culture so much as celebrate it, and his brushwork is more individual and expressive than the flat, mechanized style favored by Pop artists such as Andy Warhol. Thiebaud himself disavows an allegiance to any style, preferring to concentrate on the discipline of painting and his formal concerns. Despite this, in 1963, his figurative and landscape paintings put him among the First Generation Bay Area Figurative Artists. Wayne Thiebaud is a recipient of the National Medal of Arts and a member of the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters. In 2001, he was honored with a retrospective and monograph organized by the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco's Legion of Honor. The show traveled to the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York City; The Phillips Collection, Washington, D.C.; and the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, Texas. His work is held by major museums in the United States and abroad. Not Sold. |

The Italian sculptor Viliano Tarabella, who was born near the celebrated Carrara marble quarries, began his artistic career as a protégé of Jean Arp, whose powerful biomorphism is apparent in Tarabella's independent work as well. As a young man, Tarabella worked for seven years as a sculpture apprentice near Pietrasanta, Italy, where he became supremely skillful in carving marble. He arrived in Paris in 1957, and by 1961 was working in collaboration with both Jean Arp and Louis Dideron, assisting them in the execution of their designs in stone. In 1965, Tarabella debuted his personal work at the "Young Sculptors" exhibition in Paris and was soon exhibiting regularly at the May and Autumn Salons, and other international venues. He was awarded the Florence Gould Prize in 1985, and won the commission to produce the trophy "Victoire de la Musique" in 1996.Sold for: $2,987.50. |

| 73238 | OLIVIER DEBRÉ (French, 1920-1999) Rose d'automne, 1981 Oil on linen (faille) Inscribed verso in brush and black paint: O. Debré / faille / Rose d'automne / 81 Written on the top of the stretcher in pencil and chalk: ATANOR Written on the middle stretcher bar in black magic marker: 51 AV CARNOT - CACHAN (94) 55-1/2 x 59-1/2 inches (141.0 x 151.1 cm) PROVENANCE: Collection of the artist; Private collection, California. This elegant color-field painting is a mature work by the Parisian-born Olivier Debré, one of France's best-known abstract painters of the postwar era, whose large-format works include the stage curtain at the Comedie Française. Mr. Debré's painterly abstractions, which he described as ''opposite to the geometric abstraction of the Cubism of Cezanne and Picasso,'' involved daring splashes of color applied with thick brush strokes intended to create a mood of sensuality and poetry. ''For me, painting and emotion are inseparable,'' he said at the time of his last major retrospective in Paris in 1995 at the Galerie du Jeu de Paume on the Place de la Concorde. ''I can only paint with feeling.'' Eager to evoke emotion through abstraction, he created what he called ''signes-personnages'' (figurative signs) and ''signes-paysages'' (landscape signs) that seemed to hint at recognizable forms. He used this approach in the monumental works for which he became most celebrated, starting with the vast ornamental paintings he did for the French pavilions at World's Fairs in Montreal in 1967 and in Osaka, Japan, in 1970. In the present work of 1981, the muted greens, roses, and grays evoke the wistfulness of the end of autumn, when the vibrancy of the last blossoms fades, and the days and nights grow colder. | 73261 | AGNES MARTIN (American, 1912-2004) Untitled, 1962 Etching with silverpoint additions Signed and dated lower right: a. martin 1962 10-5/8 x 10-3/4 inches (27.0 x 27.3 cm) Agnes Martin is one of the great artists of the Abstract Expressionist movement, known for monochromatic grid painting that combined pigment and faint pencil lines. In 1957, Martin relocated from New Mexico to New York and lived in the Coenties Slip section of lower Manhattan with other notable artists such as Robert Indiana, Ellsworth Kelly, and Jack Youngerman. In 1958, she had her first solo show at the Betty Parsons Gallery. At this time she was becoming more influenced by the tight knit community of artists of which she was an integral part. She was also heavily influenced by Zen Buddhism, to which she had been exposed while attending Columbia University. Between 1957 and 1967 she strove to duplicate this line of thought in her work. She went to great lengths to become de-personalized from her painting and carefully planned her work with simple horizontal and vertical lines to establish a tone of serenity and control. Agnes Martin abruptly left New York in 1967, and quit painting as well. For seven years she lived in self-imposed exile, choosing to concentrate on mainly writing. In 1974, she began painting again, showing almost exclusively at PaceWildenstein until her death in 2004.Not Sold. |

Haring 1986 and a doodle 8-5/8 x 11-1/8 inches (21.9 x 28.3 cm) PROVENANCE: Phyllis Kind Gallery, New York; Private collection, Dallas. Keith Haring was a contemporary Pop artist who, like his friend, Jean Michel Basquiat, initially found a successful venue for his work outside of the gallery and museum network: in graffiti. This was an important factor in influencing his well-known style of intentionally simplistic line drawings rendered in bold outline. Haring began using white chalk to draw on blank black advertising panels in the subway. Recognizing that the visual effect was so dynamic and successful, he incorporated the technique into all of his work. He reversed the black and white, using felt pens to outline drawings and paintings. Haring broke many boundaries by making difficult social commentaries using a style which was friendly and unintimidating. Not Sold. |
