Ordered in 1903, the Purple Service, also known as the Tsarskoe Selo Service, was the last major porcelain service commissioned by the Imperial family and was intended for private use in the palaces at Tsarskoe Selo. The slightly tapering bowl on a socle base, decorated overall with a deep blue glaze, highlighted with gilt lines and scattered foliate motifs, the stem tied with a tricolor ribbon

PROVENANCE:
Gifted from Albert Lebrun, President of France, 1937;
American Red Cross Museum Collection, Washington, D.C. (accession no. M2001-0013).

The compote was presented in 1937 by Albert Lebrun to the American Red Cross as the Grand International Prize of Courage and Devotion. The gift recognized the American Red Cross's disaster relief and life-saving work for the over one million persons affected during the Ohio and Mississippi Valley floods earlier that year. This prize had never previously been awarded in the United States, and it also cited the organization's twenty-five years of life saving and first aid work.

Pierre-Jules Mêne was a prolific French animalier sculptor and one of the most successful of his time. The wax model for this well-known hunting group was exhibited by Mêne at the Salon in 1869. A year later, the group was reconfigured in three variations for finished works in bronze - without hounds, with three hounds, and with five hounds as in the present sculpture.

One of the leading sculptors of the Animalier School, Pierre Jules Mêne excelled in his realistic portrayals of animals. He paid particular attention to the smallest of details, often capturing a fleeting moment in time. His works typically find the subjects in their natural habitats. In this piece, two powerful stags are shown in combat - with one's neck caught between the other's antlers.

One of the most recognized works by Mêne, The Arab Falconer was originally entitled Chasse au faucon when the wax model was exhibited at the Salon in 1873. A version in bronze was submitted to the Salon the following year. This impressive group features a Turkish warrior on a galloping horse. His hand is raised supporting a now-missing falcon.
