A Celebration of the American Spirit at Heritage

Back-to-back auctions promote uniquely American art and culture, Jan. 22-25.

DALLAS - Texans are a proud bunch, and Heritage Auction Galleries is no different. In late January, to demonstrate the depth of this pride, Heritage will hold four back-to-back auctions comprising the very best of the American spirit in art, artifacts, sculpture, photography, books and manuscripts:

American Indian Art • January 22 - From children's toys to warriors' weapons, this auction includes a wide range of material, including moccasins, pipes, parfleche cases, and tobacco bags of every stripe.  Not to be missed:  A Sioux painted pictographic muslin, almost 7 feet long, depicting a Sun Dance and battle scenes.

Western Americana • January 23 & 25 - A fascinating collection of rare photographs, documents, outlaw ephemera and more, from America's period of westward expansion.  Not to be missed:  A very rare Pony Express waybill from July 1861, one of two known to be in private hands.

Art of the American West & Texas Art • January 24-25 - Paintings, bronzes and works on paper inspired by the cultures and landscapes of the western United States, and works from Texas artists of today and yesterday.  Not to be missed:  An exquisite portrait of Blackfoot Chief White Grass by Joseph Sharp, accompanied by several objects from the artist's studio and a sublime landscape by Texas master Julian Onderdonk.

Texana • January 24-25 - Historical manuscripts, maps, books and ephemera that tell the story of Texas statehood from Colonial Mexico through the Civil War.  Not to be missed:  The retained letter diary of Joseph P. Pulsifer, a massive archive of both personal and professional letters documenting the events of the Revolution as they unfolded.

Many collectors in these categories share common interests, making this conjunction of auctions particularly appealing and convenient.
