This masterful painting, one of the most important of Dean Cornwell's works, originally appeared as a two-page illustration for Rafael Sabatini's story, Ransom -- Captain Blood in the July 1930 issue of Cosmopolitan.

This painting was also reproduced on page 102 of Dean Cornwell, Dean of Illustrators by Patrician Broder, Balance House, 1978.
