Description:
EMERALD in CALCITE
Coscuez Mine, Mun. de Muzo, Vasquez-Yacopí Mining Dist., Boyacá Department, Colombia

"Combination" specimens involving Emerald normally fall into one of two types. The plentiful/lousy type, where the Emeralds are low grade carving material, embedded in some non-descript rock suitable for paperweights or small children's collections, or "so-so" grade Emeralds in actually interesting matrices. This is because, with rare exceptions, Emerald producers know that they can sell a cut Emerald very quickly. Occasionally this plan misfires and a specimen combining gem quality Emeralds in an aesthetic matrix, will find its way into the hands of someone who will not only love it; they will pay good money in order to love it.

This one managed to escape. It consists of three very visible, and one somewhat hidden, crystals growing in and out of a group of gray Calcite rhombs. The Emeralds are gemmy and dark enough to have been 'cut' and the Calcite's are both well formed and in good condition. The largest Emerald measures ~ ¾ inch (1.9 cm) in length and looks to be doubly terminated. Condition of the Emeralds and the Calcites is excellent. All in all, this little jewel is just that: "A Little Jewel."
Overall measurements: 2.5 x 2 x .75 inches (6.4 x 5.1 x 1.9 cm). Offered at no reserve.

Provenance: Western Minerals [Hoppel Catalog # D0297]

[Scale: 1 inch, with mark at 1 cm]
