NOTE:
This painting will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné of the works of Willard L. Metcalf by Ira Spanierman and Richard J. Boyle.

This early work by Metcalf predates his period of study in France. It is similar in handling to his 1877 painting on board entitled "Cloudy Day, York Beach" (6-1/4 x 10-1/2 inches, collection of Molly Armstrong), reproduced in Elizabeth de Veer and Richard Boyle, Sunlight and Shadow. The Life and Art of Willard Metcalf, fig. 8.

Re-lined canvas; scattered in-painting along the frame edges; scattered in-painting in the sky area, most notable nin the middle of the painting where the sky meets the grass area; scattered points of in-painting around little girl and in the grass areas; otherwise in very good condition commensurate with age. Framed Dimensions 20 X 33 Inches
