A WRIGHT & MANSFIELD VICTORIAN SATINWOOD CABINET
Wright & Mansfield, London, England, circa 1870-1880
Marks: WRIGHT & MANSFIELD, 104 BOND ST. LONDON, JAMES PHILLIPS & SONS, LTD., FURNISHERS & REMOVERS, UNION ST., BRISTOL
65 inches high x 94 inches wide (165.1 x 238.8 cm)

The cabinet on seven acanthus leaf carved feet and lobed legs with a pair of convex outer shelves to each side, concave cabinets to center inlaid in arabesque motif with inset round cartouche to each cabinet with gilt border, bellflower motif to outer borders, a veneered fluted border to middle, brass arcade border to top and urn-style finials to back corners.

As regular contributors to the major International Expositions of the period, Wright and Mansfield were recognized for their excellence at the 1867 Exposition Universelle in Paris where a satinwood cabinet set with Wedgwood plaques was awarded a gold medal. Following the end of the Exposition the cabinet was purchased by the new South Kensington Museum (now the Victoria and Albert Museum).

In addition to the 1867 Exposition piece, the Victoria and Albert Museum houses a cabinet by Wright & Mansfield similar to this lot.

With repairs along central fluted veneer and a missing portion to the far left corner; one urn broken and filled to the base, fading throughout and minor nicks and scratches commensurate with age.
