THE JEAN AND GRAHAM DEVOE WILLIFORD CHARITABLE TRUST

PROVENANCE:
The Cooley Gallery, Old Lyme, CT (label verso).

Walter Leighton Clark was an American businessman, inventor, and artist based in Stockbridge, Massachusetts and New York City. Among other achievements, in 1923 he founded with John Singer Sargent the Grand Central Art Galleries, located within New York City's Grand Central Terminal, to offer notable American artists the opportunity to exhibit their work in the United States without having to send it abroad. Together with sculptor Daniel Chester French and Dr. Austen Fox Riggs, he purchased the Stockbridge Casino, a handsome building designed by Stanford White in 1887 which had fallen into disuse. They moved it to its current location and transformed it into the Berkshire Playhouse, home to the important regional Berkshire Theatre Festival he played a role in founding. Clark also played a significant role in mounting the first posthumous exhibition of Sargent's work, at Grand Central Galleries in 1928. Clark was entrusted by Sargent's family to sort through the artist's London studio to select several hundred works for the exhibition. Clark painted this work in Kent, England around the time he was working on the Sargent exhibition.

Clark, Walter Leighton:. American sculptor, 1859-1935
