Description:
JOHN BRADLEY HUDSON (American, 1832-1903)
Rocky Cove with Balancing Rock, 1880
Oil on canvas
10 x 14-1/4 inches (25.4 x 36.2 cm)
Monogrammed and dated lower right: J.B.H. / 1880

Landscapist John Bradley Hudson was born in Boston and was active from the 1850s through the late 1890s in Portland, Maine, where he frequently painted the rugged coastline. His palette is quite idiosyncratic in its pairings of rich siennas, saturated cobalt blues, and vivid greens. The present work is an outstanding example of his ability to create striking compositions. Many of his paintings are rendered as they are here, most noticeably in the rocks, with a sharp upper left to lower right slant to the brushwork. He regularly exhibited his paintings at the Boston Athenaeum, and his works are in the permanent collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and Colby College.

Hudson, John Bradley:.
