PROVENANCE:
Christie's East, New York, March 14, 1995, lot 2.

Graham Williford's taste for collecting paintings by American artists working in France was not so catholic as to preclude him from occasionally acquiring work by European artists who chose to paint North American subjects--either from firsthand exposure, or at second hand via print sources. Frenchman Regis Francois Gignoux belonged to the former class of painters. Born in Lyon, France, he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts under the French history painter Delaroche, who inspired him to turn his talents toward landscape painting. Gignoux arrived in the United States from France in 1840 and remained for three decades, becoming an important member of the second generation of Hudson River School painters. He first maintained a studio in Brooklyn, New York, and both George Inness and John LaFarge were his pupils. He was a member of the National Academy of Design, and was the first president of the Brooklyn Art Academy. By 1844, Gignoux had opened a studio in New York City and became one the first artists to join the famous Tenth Street Studio, where other important landscapists including Albert Bierstadt, Frederic Church, Jasper Francis Cropsey, and John Frederick Kensett also worked. Gignoux became well known for this meticulous renderings of the northeastern American landscape, and as this painting proves, could not resist the opportunity to visit and record the dramatic topography around Niagara Falls. During the 1850s, when he painted the present work, he accompanied fellow artists Frederic Church and John F. Kensett on several sketching trips.

Gignoux, Régis François:. French painter, 1816-1882, active in the United States
