Oil on board

FROM THE ESTATE OF DAVID AND EULA WINTERMANN.

PROVENANCE:
Artist's estate stamp verso;
Taggart, Jorgensen & Putman Gallery, Washington, D.C.

Philadelphian Martha Walter applied an Impressionist palette and active brushwork to exuberant, people-filled landscapes in Coney Island, Atlantic City, Gloucester, the French and Adriatic Coasts, and Northern Africa. She studied with William Merritt Chase at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, appropriating his plein-air technique and winning numerous prizes, including a two-year traveling scholarship to Europe. In Paris, she briefly trained at the Académie Julian before returning to New York in 1912. Walter's beach scenes from this period, from Coney Island to Gloucester, underscore her facile handling of color - broad expanses of light sand broken by saturated, bright pigments in bathing suits and umbrellas - and her preference for black accents and vigorous brushstrokes.

During the 1930s, Walter traveled throughout North Africa and along the Dalmatian Coast, where she painted bustling street life. Market Place, Dalmatian Coast exhibits denser color than Beach Scene while sharing an emphasis on spaces thronged with spontaneously rendered figures. Today Walter's paintings can be seen at the Musée du Luxembourg, Paris; Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia; Art Institute of Chicago; Detroit Institute of Arts; and Toledo Museum of Art.

Walter, Martha:. American painter, 1875-1976
