The Contract

15 x 25-1/2 inches (38.1 x 64.8 cm)
Signed lower left: Juan Pablo Salinas / y Teruel

PROVENANCE:
Private collection, Dallas, Texas.

Born in Madrid in 1871, Juan Pablo Salinas y Teruel spent most of his career in Rome, acquiring a reputation among dealers and collectors for his 18th-century costume pieces set in opulent church and domestic interiors. After studying in Madrid at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, popularized by Francisco de Goya a generation earlier, he moved to Rome in 1886 and joined his brother Augustin Salinas in the Spanish artists' colony. Salinas' rich coloration and fanciful brushwork characterize his early paintings of ancient and medieval subjects, as well as his mature genre scenes. In paintings such as The Contract, which depicts an aristocratic marriage, he features his own family members among the crowd and his personal collection of antiques as decorative props.

Salinas y Teruel, Juan Pablo:.
